Weekly Howl | 1.13

November 15, 2021

Hello San Altos Families,

This week is parent/teacher conferences and it is the perfect time for you to find out how your child is doing. You should be receiving your child’s report card in the mail and this week you will be able to meet with your child’s teacher over Zoom. Translation services are available and teachers are able to meet at various times to accommodate your schedule. During the conference your child’s teacher will discuss different assessments and what the results mean as well as your child’s strengths and some areas for growth. The teacher will also have work samples so that you can see what your student has been working on in class and may have other pieces of work to share as well.

As part of your child’s education team, please know that you can ask more questions and you can make suggestions about what works at home. You can talk about what would help them at home and also the academic and social/emotional work you have been doing.

Most importantly, remember that the education of your student is a team effort. It takes all of us to meet their needs and ensure that they are learning and growing to fulfill their potential. In this partnership there are always opportunities for misunderstandings, excitement and/or sadness about your students' progress or choices. During the pandemic we have experienced a tremendous amount of loss, sadness and many other emotions and our children have just started back to school full-time in August. There is a learning curve for us all as we work our way toward a more equitable system and take on the new challenges that this school year has brought.

This pandemic has taught us among other things, the importance of community. Our school should not be a place that we do not interact with and feel a part of. As one of our primary goals moving forward, community engagement, opportunity and partnership is how we help our students achieve.

As always feel free to meet with me and thank you for all you do to continue strengthening our San Altos community.

Big picture
We are learning and growing so much together and children are already applying life long learning skills. In our Kindergarten class, we are discovering a love for reading and storytelling. We have begun reading sentences and mastering our sight words. Students enjoy visiting our ABC rooms each day to practice handwriting and phonics. Through hands-on activities, young learners are excelling at addition and subtraction. We can write almost all our numbers! Every day we spend time outdoors playing games, climbing around, and creating friendships. Our class absolutely loves exploring different art techniques- we have many talented little artists!

SDC SABA

Hi. My name is Jennifer Iden-Liss. I have been at San Altos for 16 years and have worked with children for over 25 years. I have had the pleasure of assisting in Ms. Kipnis' Special Day Class for 10 years and I still learn something new every day. I am originally from Detroit, Michigan and moved to San Diego 23 years ago. I have been married to my husband John for 26 years. We have a son named Kian who attends SDSU. We also share our home with 2 cats, Tilly and Scamper. I enjoy music, musical theater, reading and bowling. My family and friends are extremely important to me and there is nothing better than spending time with them. I love working with kids, San Altos and getting to know the students and families of Lemon Grove!

Coyote Fist Bump

This week we would like to recognize our awesome front office extraordinaire, Jackie Wilson. Mrs. Jackie has been here to support staff, students and families every day and make sure there is always a smile on our face. From ordering supplies to supporting substitutes, students and families, she does it all. Mrs. Jackie is one of the first people you see when you arrive at San Altos and is usually the last person you see when you leave. Thank you Mrs. Jackie for everything you do to keep San Altos running. We are sending you a virtual Coyote Fist Bump.
