HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
WHITE OUT WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 10th
In celebration of SNOW, WINTER, and SOMERSET ELEMENTARY, we are going to have a spirit day on Wednesday, January 10th. The theme is "White Out Wednesday". Wear as much white as you can!
PREPARING FOR RECESS and SLEDDING/SNOW PLAY
- snow pants
- boots
- winter coat
- hat
- mittens
We have a limited supply of coats, hats, and mittens if you need assistance.
DONATIONS BEING ACCEPTED for the "KIDS CLOSET"
Are you cleaning out closets this winter? We are currently accepting donations of leggings and sweatpants in sizes 6-8 and 14-16 for our clothing closet. Snow pants are another item that we would accept donations on.
ATTENDANCE MATTERS
Did you know?
- Starting in kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
- Missing 10 percent (or about 18 days) can make it harder to learn to read.
- Students can still fall behind if they miss just a day or two every few weeks (and can equal 18 days very quickly)
- Absences can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up.
- Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school-and themselves.
- Start building this habit so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important.
What You Can D0!
- Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.
- Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
- Don’t let your child stay home unless he or she is truly sick. Sometimes stomachaches can be a sign of anxiety and not a reason to stay home.
- If your child seems anxious to go to school, talk to teachers, the principal, school counselors or other parents for advice on how to help your child feel more comfortable and excited about learning.
- Avoid medical appointments and extended trips when school is in session.
Good attendance will help your child do well in school and at work in the future
Hartland Public Library News
Here’s what is happening at Hartland Public Library (HPL) in January 2024
Hartland Public Library invites all in the community to be the first person in 2024 to sign up for a Library Card. Just stop into HPL and talk to Library Director, Lorrie Sanborn at the library. While there, sign up for the Winter Reading Challenge open to all ages. The challenge ends 1/31/24 but you only have to read 25 picture books. Lorrie has all the details about how to win prizes. You could win, as only a few have signed up to participate thus far.
HPL will feature winter-themed "Take-n-Makes" for January and the highlighted books at the library will include books about snow, blizzards, Martin Luther King, Jr., and all the new books.
You can choose a fruit and a free book at every visit. There is also a food cupboard which houses can goods, free for the taking.
The HPL glass display case, run by the Friends of HPL, will be featuring carved wooden objects during the month of January. They welcome any you may have to share for that time period. Items for the February display will be “Vases and Valentines”. Do you have an old Valentine that you would be willing to share for the month of February or a pretty vase?
The Friends of HPL will be meeting on January 18th at 6pm. New members are always welcome. If you are looking to volunteer in your community in some way, consider attending a library meeting of the Friends and getting involved. We have 9 meetings a year (none in Dec., July, or Aug.).
The Book Talk group will be reading Mad Honey by Jodie Picoult in January and will be meeting by Zoom on 1/30/24 at 6pm to discuss it. Contact Library Director, Lorrie Sanborn at 938-4702 during regular library hours or email her at hartlandmainepubliclibrary@gmail.com with any questions you may have, to reserve a book, or to link up with with Zoom to be part of the Book Talk discussion.
HPL will be closed to observe MLK Day on 1/16/24.
HPL is located at 16 Mill St. in Hartland.
