January 7th-11th
Highlights from our week:
Shared Reading - This week our class read two similar books titled The Mitten by Jan Brett and The Mitten by Alvin Tresselt. Students evaluated the similarities and differences between the two books and completed ordering activities to retell important events. On Friday our class completed an assessment on Seesaw for both books.
Writing - First Grade has begun the Non-Fiction writing unit! This week students learned about Polar Bears and used the information they acquired to write three facts and a conclusion about the animal. Students took their first draft and began recording it again in their writing notebooks. This unit will continue through the month of January.
Science - Students continued their exploration into the Science of Winter by exploring the differences between Deciduous and Coniferous trees. Students were able to identify how each tree prepared for winter, physical clues to identify each tree, and why some trees must be dormant when it snows.
Math - This week our class continued to work with the number line. Students practiced adding and subtracting using the number line and equations. Our class used a large string to create an interactive number line which allowed them to place different numbers in order depending on their relation to other numbers. We will continue to utilize the number line to solve word problems and equations.
