What is a centaur?
A centaur is a half-horse half-man, with the upper body of a horse and the lower body of a man. They were spawned by a cloud nymph, Nephele, who was raped by by a Lapith king, Ixion. Another story says that they were spawned by a centaur named Centaurus. Although there are many stories about these creatures, they are obviously pure mythology.
Centaurs are known to be savage, lustful, and commonly drunk. They lived in the mountains and forests, and used rocks and sticks to hunt for food.
A centaur named Chiron was known for his exceptional goodness and wisdom.
He traded his life for the release of Prometheus.
Why do they exist?
The ancient people of Thessaly would spend most of their time on horseback, usually hunting bulls. Because centaurs are half-men, half-horse, they viewed these as an ancient art.
