October Newsletter
1st Grade- Salem Elementary School
News
The first grade teachers are pleased with how well things are going so far this year. We are looking forward to our apple orchard trip on October 17. If you have not returned your permission slip and money please do this as soon as possible. We have noticed that some students are struggling to clean up their lunch mess at the end of lunch. If you pack your child's lunch please be mindful of the number of packages that they will have to carry to the trashcan. One option to help make it easier for your child to clean up is to include a grocery store bag in their lunchbox to help them carry their trash to the trashcan. We also ask that you begin encouraging independence with skills like tying shoes and unpacking in the morning.
Reminders
Please remember to sign your child’s planner daily. This is a great communication tool for us.
Please remember to send lunch money so that your child is not accruing charges in the cafeteria.
If students have any lunch debt they will not be allowed to buy ice cream or extras.
- With colder weather approaching, please switch out your child’s change of clothes in the book bag so that it is appropriate for colder weather.

Field Trip to the Apple Orchard and Fire Station
On Tuesday, October 17, first grade will be visiting Apple Hill Orchard and the Morganton Fire Station. We will be taking two activity buses. We will be leaving Salem promptly at 9:00 am and returning to the school by 2:00 pm. Children should wear comfortable shoes and their field trip t-shirt for this trip. The cost for this trip is $12. This cost covers admission to the orchard, payment for bus drivers, and gas for the buses. Parents will pay $8 at the orchard upon arrival (no earlier than 9:15 am on the day of the trip).
