LS Weekly Update 9.30.2022
Spirit Week + PT Conferences + Gov Board Forum + PTO + More
Happy October!
We finished out the last day of September with slightly cooler weather, a full-day Friday and the final day of first quarter. Grades were locked and enforced this morning at 9:00AM. Report cards will be ready for Parent Teacher Conferences next week. Our goal is 100% parent attendance so be sure you've signed up for a conference with your child's teacher(s). We are so happy to welcome parents back on campus for conferences this year!
We also celebrated students earning SPOT ON positive behavior tickets with the bi-monthly Kudos Kart. Our Student Council students walk the halls delivering treats to students for 5 or 10 SPOT ON tickets. Students were so excited to cash in their tickets and celebrate their positive behavior with well-earned treats!
Don't forget SPIRIT WEEK is also next week! We are looping in Digital Citizenship Month and the various physical and mental awareness month topics in our Spirit Day themes. Don't be surprised if you show up to PT Conferences and see teachers dressed up in Spirit swag as well :)

SEPTEMBER COUNSELOR LESSONS
Mrs. Wells, our part-time counselor, has been meeting with all classes monthly to teach our students strategies for social-emotional stability and success. This month's lessons were all about feelings! How can we identify our feelings, communicate them, work through them, and come out on the other side strong and stable, no matter the incidents that are brought our way. Here is a snapshot of her lessons for K-3 and 4-6. We are so lucky to have Mrs. Wells on campus to support our overall EQ goals as well as individual students as needed.

PENNY WARS SUPPORT SOLDIERS BEST FRIEND NON-PROFIT
Thank you to all the students and families who are donating to our Penny War! We have STEEP competition right now as students work to fill their grade level jars with pennies and bills....and fill other grade level jars with silver coins to "subtract" points.
Last week PreK won the Penny War traveling trophy for top points of the week!
This week 3RD GRADE earned the trophy!
Who will be the traveling trophy recipients next week for most points?! Keep bringing in those coins to support our non-profit Soldier's Best Friend!
ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL REMINDERS
Also-- no students will be released after 3:15PM from the office. If you arrive to pick up your child early to avoid traffic lines you will have to wait until the Kinder release (3:20) or 1st-6th release (3:30) to get your child. This minimizes classroom disruptions and ensures students are completing their full day of learning.
LOW COST INTERNET OPTION
A new government benefit, the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), provides eligible households with a discount on internet services and devices. The benefit provides $30/month to buy internet service and $100 to buy a computer or tablet. Print this ACP flier
Cox is continuing to offer the Connect2Compete option for eligible families which allows families to purchase internet services for $9.95/month and includes a modem. The ACP program can be used to cover the $9.95 fee. More information here: www.cox.com/residential/internet/connect2compete.html
6TH GRADE ELA
In The Giver, the Ceremony of Twelve is the most important ceremony in Jonas's community because it is when the adolescent children are given their permanent assignments, which are their individually selected occupations. It is the last ceremony each year and is considered a rite of passage to becoming an adult. These children have to go into training at a young age.
Some jobs in Jonas’ community include: Department of Justice, Nurturer, Street Cleaner, Fish Hatchery Attendant, etc. There is one special assignment called the Receiver of Memory. This assignment is an honorable assignment and a special person is chosen.
Mrs. Galietti's students had a blast during their Ceremony of 12 and are looking forward to what’s ahead in their unit of The Giver.
PRIORITY OPEN ENROLLMENT 23-24
Open Enrollment is underway for the 2023– 2024 school year. Through Open Enrollment, your child has the opportunity to attend any school of their choice, if capacity permits. Initial open enrollment applications should be submitted by December 5, 2022.
If you have a child starting school next year (any grade) and have a sibling who currently attends our school on open enrollment, you should also apply by December 5, 2022. Priority will be given to siblings of currently enrolled students if grade level capacity permits. You must apply online at dvusd.org/openenrollment. It is not necessary to reapply for Open Enrollment for currently enrolled students at Legend Springs, only new students wishing to attend.
For those of you with family, friends, or neighbors looking to attend LS next year, it is essential that you submit an application ASAP prior to the the closing of our priority window. In most grades, we typically have to waitlist the majority of students applying after December.
Families will be notified if the application has been approved or denied via email in January 2023. Upon notification, a registration must be completed online within 10 days of receiving the acceptance notification. Otherwise, the student potentially forfeits the approved Open Enrollment and will be removed from the waitlist, needing to reapply if still interested.
If you have any questions, please contact the front office at 623-376-4500.
WHAT HAPPENS ON EARLY RELEASE FRIDAYS?
Early Release Friday
The majority of our Fridays are 2:00PM release days in DVUSD. These days are reserved for our campus Professional Learning Communities and Staff Development for our DVUSD staff. These 90-minute early release days offer teachers and staff the time for collaboration and planning throughout the district in order to enhance the education offered district-wide and offer the best learning experience for our students. These early release Fridays will occur most Fridays, with some exceptions. View the instructional calendar for more information. Visit the start and dismiss page to find out when your child’s school releases during those dates.
