Social Studies apps

The apps provided in this poster can be used in the social studies classroom setting for a variety of topics. These apps include Google Earth, Historypin, FlipCards, NPR news and Papers- stories from Facebook. NOTE: all these apps are compatible with iOS, few may be compatible with both iOS and Android.

Google Earth

Although it is not as interactive as the desktop version, the mobile version provides a more compact experience. The mobile version allows for interaction through the locations searched linking it to YouTube videos, which students can learn more about. The interface is simple and easy to use providing quick access menus, however managing the many layers may provide difficult but can be managed through watching the tutorials. The app does not provide any new learning experiences, but easily provides excellent raw data of locations, which is useful.

Historypin

This is an engaging app that acts as a intergenerational project in which people share and view historical information across the globe. Students can sign up using their google account to post content or just view content without making an account. This app would most likely aid in project that could require historical content. This app would most likely help the student in their understanding in an engaging way through the exploration of the many pins posted as well as the social aspects it involves.

NPR News

NPR is an app that allows students to view and listen to stories that are either live or current to the various world events. The great things about this app is that is allows for offline listening, in case of non-connectivity to internet. This app will ease students into becoming more into current news events facilitated by its easy navigation that tracks readers progress.

Paper- stories from Facebook

This app is another type of news app that combines the app Facebook with external news sources. The app allows for users to access stories of interest to them or pertaining to the learning material at hand and explore the various sources provided. This app would allow social networking sites to be viewed as something other than social to the students. Although the interface may be different, it use and navigation is easy and natural.

FlipCards - Flashcard app for memory training

This app acts as a great study tool for students to help prepare for assessments. It connects to other online quiz databases or the students can create their own quizzes with the material they have learnt from class. Although it is not the perfect study tool it can be used to supplement and get students started and engaged in retaining material.
