The Trekker Times

Principal's Pen

Dear Bishop Baraga Trekkers,

Today is the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. If you've never read about St. Francis, I urge you to look him up and read about his life. Born the son of wealthy parents, Francis chose a radical path of devotion to Christ, abandoning the things of this world, living in poverty, and following the call to begin a new order. I have a special place in my heart for St. Francis as I was able to spend time in his birthplace of Assisi several years ago and pray at his tomb. I also attended the Franciscan University of Steubenville for my undergraduate degree, and the Franciscans there had a great impact on my life. St. Francis is great example of what can happen when we make the radical change to give our lives to God. He can do great things through us!

This month we would like to have our first Parent Association meeting. Last year, the Parent Association did not meet, although they sponsored various events for the students and teachers. This year, we would like to get this committee up and running. The purpose of the Parent Association is to promote and provide extracurricular and enrichment opportunities for students and faculty. Our first meeting will be on Thursday, October 21st, at 6:30 p.m. at the school. The meeting should last about 1 hour. At this first meeting we will discuss the purpose and function of the committee, a schedule of future meetings, plan for our first big event (All Saints Day Festival), and hopefully appoint officers. If you are not already serving in some capacity I strongly encourage you to sign up and be a part of this committee. Rather than have a few parents pulling the load, we would really like to see everyone roll up their sleeves and take part in volunteering and making Bishop Baraga the best place it can be for our children. I am asking that you please RSVP on the link provided below. I plan to make personal phone call invitations if need be.

Our new virtue of the month for October is responsibility. The teachers will be working on this virtue with the students throughout October. Responsibility means to fulfill your duties and accept the consequences of your words and actions. For our students that means doing their homework, cleaning their rooms, and doing their chores. Please make note of this virtue at home throughout the month of October.

Our Caught Being a Christian Award this week goes to Grace Covitz. Grace noticed a spill in the closet in the classroom and another one in the hallway. She cleaned them both up. She was practicing the virtues of kindness and courtesy. Great job, Grace!

God bless,

Angela Oller

Extra Recess

We had beautiful weather last week. I caught a number of classes outside having extra recess!

Third Grade

The third graders are working hard with the help of Mrs. Ellis. Last week, on the Feast of St. Jerome, we talked about the fact that learning is hard work. Some things might come easily to us, and sometimes it might take a lot of hard work and practice to learn something. Below you can see the third graders demonstrating that hard work!
