JBD FRIDAY FOCUS
February 8, 2019 ~ "Embrace the Adventure!"
Smart Watches and Devices
Dear Parents and Guardians,
This is a new era with computers and technology at our finger tips. Virginia Beach City Public Schools has a 'Bring Your Own Device" policy in place to help with the educational program. This policy was put into effect several years ago prior to our entire school division being 1-1 with Chromebooks. Students are still able to bring devices to be used with teacher permission. However, the Bring Your Own Device policy states devices used for communication are to only be used before and after school. Many of our students have Smart Watches. We do not have a problem with the watches as long as students are not communicating with parents or anyone else during the day. We have had students text parents because they forgot lunches, telling them they have a headache, or to pick them up early. This goes against the School Board policy. Please know that teachers may be asking students to put these watches in their backpacks if there is a concern regarding communication. Rest assured, anytime a child needs anything that requires parent contact, we are on top of the situation. Additionally, these devices are expensive and the school is not responsible if they are lost.
Below is the link to the Virginia Beach City Public Schools 'Bring Your Own Device" policy and long with a snip from the website. If you would like more information regarding School Board policies, please go to www.vbschools.com. We appreciate your help with this matter.
In other news, we are at the half-way point in the year and so proud of the progress your children are making! Report cards go home on Monday, Feb. 11. The growth is fabulous. You all should be very proud of your child's hard work. As always, if you have questions or concerns about grades, please reach out to your child's teacher.
Thank you all for all you do for us and have a wonderful weekend!

CLINIC CORNER~FEBRUARY IS DENTAL HEALTH MONTH
The ADA recommends the following for good oral hygiene: ( www.ada.org )
- Brush your teeth twice a day with an ADA accepted fluoride toothpaste.
- Clean between teeth daily with floss.
- Eat a balanced diet and limit snacks.
- Visit your dentist every 6 months for cleanings and oral exams.
Some additional practices that can prevent tooth decay are:
Have sealants applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth in children. The CDC reported that sealants reduce tooth decay by 70% in school age children.
Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months and more often for children.
Drink fluoridated water.
Supervise the younger children when they are brushing their teeth.
Make brush time fun.
Use the month of February to refresh your child’s interest in dental health. The following website is a fun place for your child to visit before a trip to the dentist:

The students know the log-in and password by heart as they use it daily to log in to their computers at school. Ask them for it!
The user ID is your child’s permanent number (also used for Lunch and book check out. Your child has this same number through 12th grade)
The password is your child’ school computer password. This will change every 60 days. Please ask your child for this password first, and if that is unsuccessful, follow through with the classroom teacher.
+ Parent Portal is a place to review your child’s permanent records through 12th grade. It requires a two-step process to access so establish your account well before you need it. Go to VBSchools.com and click Parent Portal under the PARENTS drop down.
