Plan to attend the 2019 CCS District Poetry Slam THIS Saturday, April 13, 5-9p.m. at Eastmoor Academy High School. Whether your school is bringing a team or not, you should attend to see our students using their voices. The event costs $5.

DEBATE CAMP OFFERED AS PART OF CAPITAL UNIVERSITY'S CREATIVE ARTS CAMPS
CREATIVE ARTS CAMPS AT CAPITAL
REGISTER HERE for any of the June 23 - 28 camps. Learn from Capital’s talented faculty during this one-week immersive summer camp experience for students ages 11-13* and 14-17 interested in exploring the creative arts. Here are the 2019 Camp Offerings:
- Art & Design Camp
- Screenwriting Camp

- Improv Comedy Basics Camp
- Music Camp: I Wanna Rock – A Week of Music Making
- High School Debate Camp
- Middle School Debate Camp*
-The overnight campers will stay in one of the supervised residence halls, be provided breakfast, lunch, snacks, and dinner, and participate in classes and activities. Recreational activities will be scheduled in the evenings.Overnight residential fee per participant (which includes all meals and fees) is $795.
*Middle School Debate Camp is a daytime only camp for students ages 11-13. The day campers will be provided lunch, snacks, and participate in all classes and activities. Middle School Debate camp fee per participant (which includes all meals and fees) is $350.
SPECIFICS FOR THE DEBATE CAMP
The Ludlum Forum, home of Capital University debate, welcomes students to the Capital University campus for its summer workshop. Students with no experience OR prior experience are welcome and sessions will be tailored to experience levels. This five-day experience will give students essential skills for success in competitive high school debate, and for success in the classroom and future professional life. An experienced and dedicated staff under the direction of Dr. Stephen Koch will provide immersion in practical debate skills as well as lay a foundation for understanding the dynamics, ethics and philosophy of public advocacy. Key processes, including policy research, case construction, brief construction, rebuttals, cross examination, evidence analysis and critical decision-making will be explained, coached and practiced.
THE HIGH SCHOOL SPRING DEBATE TOURNAMENT HAS BEEN CANCELED
DEBATE TOURNAMENT
There will not be a high school debate division at the Spring Debate Tournament on April 18th at Capital University. The Middle School Tournament will still take place.
THE PAR POETRY CHALLENGE: A NEW POETRY CONTEST FOR CCS STUDENTS
Competing in the PAR Poetry Challenge
First designate a building teacher who will contact Melissa Charles in the PAR office to set up a poetry pick-up time, prior to May 10th.
Second, ask students to compose poems on the topic of teacher appreciation and give those poems to their school's designated building teacher. Be sure to include student name, contact number, poem subject, teacher name, and school name.
Winning the PAR Poetry Challenge
Three winners will be chosen from each of these groups: K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. All winners will receive an award and prize. Winners will be asked to read their poem in front of an audience of teachers at the New Educator Celebration on May 21st.
CELEBRATING NATIONAL POETRY MONTH
1. Attend the CCS Poetry Slam this Saturday, April 13th from 5-9pm at Eastmoor Academy.

3. If you are a member of NCTE, sign up for the 2019 #NCTEverse email series, a members-only professional learning opportunity! You’ll receive an email each weekday starting April 1 that focuses on a poet and shares resources for how to bring that poet's works into the classroom. 4. Apply for the Maya Angelou Teacher Award for Poetry
If you have an innovative idea of how to bring poetry into your school or classroom, apply for the Maya Angelou Teacher Award for Poetry by May 31 for a chance to win $10,000 to support your poetry work in your school.

-Lightning Paths: 75 Poetry Writing Exercises by Kyle Vaughn
Lightning Paths features poetry writing exercises that, while they teach and utilize technique, also focus on and inspire the intuitive and imaginative qualities of poetry. Each exercise features a philosophical introduction that explains the nature of what the exercise aims for, the detailed exercise instructions, and a student example.
-Living Voices: Multicultural Poetry in the Middle School Classroom by Jaime R. Wood
In this versatile resource, Wood focuses on the poetry of three “living voices”—Nikki Giovanni, Li-Young Lee, and Pat Mora. Through easy-to-follow lesson plans, Wood uses the work of these poets to demonstrate key concepts such as symbolism, personification, characterization, and theme. The lessons have been teacher-tested in middle school classrooms and are designed to encourage students to take ownership of their own learning.

SCHOOLS REIMAGINED REBOOT, APRIL 30TH
If your school is ready to break free of traditional learning, register now for the Schools Reimagined Reboot Leadership Conference on April 30, where you can reimagine teaching and learning in a creative, meaningful way. The Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center has joined with WOSU and the Ohio Department of Education to host the event at the historic Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, filming location for the iconic movie, Shawshank Redemption.
Join them as they weave the film’s theme throughout the day. The conference begins at the Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center and includes transportation, a tour of the prison, keynote speakers Jimmy Casas and Kevin Honeycutt, lunch and professional development opportunities. THURBER HOUSE ADULT WRITING WORKSHOPS & MASTER CLASSES
Thurber House Adult Writing Workshops and Master Classes are designed for adults of all levels of writing experience. Adult Writing Workshops are two-hour stand-alone classes on a variety of topics.They take place on Mondays from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at Thurber Center, 91 Jefferson Ave., beginning on May 8th. Master Classes are four-hour stand-alone in-depth sessions.They take place on Saturdays from 9:00am - 1:00 pm at Thurber Center, 91 Jefferson Ave., beginning on May 20th.
