Black History Celebration
February 24, 2021
Hello Ohlone Families!
There is a lot happening! Ohlone is BUSY :).
Our teachers have been engaging students with read-alouds about impactful Black Americans and movements through our history. Students are learning about perspective (e.g. Who is telling this story?) and celebrating the great accomplishments from Black Americans in the areas of science, art, literature, math, dance, and politics.
Thanks to our amazing PTA, there are two fabulous events scheduled this week as part of our Black History Celebration. Of special note, we have Patrice McLaurin reading her inspiring book tonight at 6:30pm, Have You Thanked an Inventor Today? On Friday, we have a Black History Family Fun Night. We are sure to bring the house down with a professional DJ at the turntable! Also, check out the newsletters below to learn about Black Americans and impactful Black History moments. This info will come in handy for the games and fun on Friday :).
This Saturday, we have STEM Fair! Thank you to Jay and the STEM Fair volunteers for their heavy lifting on getting this event into orbit. What an amazing way to celebrate science, technology, engineering, and math! It's another virtual STEM year, and nothing is going to get in the way of kids expressing their love of the techie arts!
Saturday is also Farm Work Day for 2/3. What better way to start your morning? Elke, Iris, the kids, chickens, and bees - they are all waiting for you! Sign-up using the link and get those overalls on! Everyone is welcome :). Masks and physical distancing protocols are required. Just you, not the animals.
Finally, the Sweetheart Awards is also scheduled on Saturday. Educators and students who have made a positive difference in the lives of students with special needs will be honored. Find out who is being celebrated this year below!
A big thank you goes out to our PTA President, Elbra Mammone and the PTA for their collaborative effort with El Carmelo to bring these fabulous Black History Celebration events to our community. I hope you and your children can tune in tonight for the bedtime story and again on Friday for the fun!

Have You Thanked an Inventor Today?
Written by Patrice McLaurin, Illustrated by Dian Wang
Wednesday, February 24th, 6:30-7:30pm
This is an online event
We are delighted to host children’s author Patrice McLaurin for a district-wide virtual author visit. Patrice will read from her wonderful picture book Have You Thanked an Inventor Today? At the end of the presentation there will be a 12-book giveaway, with a signed book going to a student participant from each of the 12 PAUSD elementary schools.
About the book Have You Thanked an Inventor Today?
Patrice McLaurin’s picture book Have You Thanked an Inventor Today? is a unique journey into the often forgotten contributions of the African-American inventors that have greatly enriched America’s landscape. It chronicles the day of a little boy, demonstrating with each page how the genius of African-American minds is utilized on a daily basis. The book comes complete with brief biographies about each inventor as well as fun activities to promote and encourage reading comprehension.
About the author, in her own words:
“I’m a mother, a wife, a sister, an aunt, a daughter, a cousin, a niece, a friend, a poet, an image activist (thank you Michaela Angela Davis), a teacher (by calling, not by trade) and an advocate for children. That’s it, no bells and whistles. I’m just a woman, who loves our babies and works continuously to foster their excellence.”
Black History Celebration Newsletters
Each newsletter highlights at least five Black Leaders, two Black History moments, and four Black History learning opportunities for our elementary PTA students and families. During our 2/26 Family Fun Night, some of the concepts our Bingo and Kahoot games will cover will be based on our Newsletter content.
