This Week in Prep 1
This is now our third week of school. Our little ones have settled in well with the school routine. They continue to learn about the happenings in their new school environment with enthusiasm and joyfulness. Children are keen to explore indoor and outdoor play. New bonds of friendships are emerging and we are all looking forward to a wonderful year of learning!
We began our new IPC unit, 'All About Me' by looking at photos of our family and talking about how our families are both the same and different. If you have not sent in your family photo, please do so by next week so that your child can participate in this activity; these photos will also make up a large part of our IPC 'Learning Journey' board. We also discussed what we already know about our world and ourselves and what we would like to learn. As a link to our Language Arts program we worked on how to write our own name as well as the names of our classmates. Next week we will begin looking inside our bodies and talking about the importance of our bones and organs. If you have old x-rays at home you would like to share with the class please send them in to your class teacher. These make an excellent resource for this exciting unit.
In Language Arts we learned out Jolly Phonic sound /Aa/ and practiced writing 'I can' sentences in our Learning Journals. We discussed the importance of taking care of our books, choosing books we enjoy and basic concepts of print; such as author, illustrators, and reading front to back and left to right. In Mathematics we working on matching objects and sorting and classifying these objects by attribute. We also identified objects that do not belong to specific groups.
We look forward to seeing everyone Tuesday night at 6 pm for the Year Ahead meeting. Please proceed to the ES Hall for a short presentation and then later to the classroom to hear about our fabulous Prep 1 journey ahead! (Please note this is a presentation on curriculum and for parents only).

Beyond the Haze Competition
SJII is partnering with Beyond the Haze (an initiative co-founded by SJII parent Paul Judge) to launch an exciting and educational school-wide contest that support our school sustainability program. SJII is joining several other local schools in participating in the Beyond the Haze contest, which challenges students to look into the root causes of Singapore's annual haze problem and think of ways they can make a difference in saving the environment.
Please encourage your children as they put together their submissions and visit their Facebook page at Facebook.com/beyondthehaze to learn more! Together we can promote greater environmental awareness at the school.
Posterise it! (Ages 4-9)
What’s going on behind the haze? Design a poster that explains why there is a haze problem and why this needs to stop. The poster may depict damage to the rainforest, the affect animals/people, or even paper and palm oil products. The poster can be in any style and can be painted, drawn, or designed with computer graphics.
Prizes (2 age categories)
1st Prize - Kindle Fire Tablet, Beyond The Haze gift pack, 1-year subscription to Asian Geographic Junior Magazine.
