Beaverton SRTS is Here to Help Meet Students' "Essential" Needs
Back to School looks different this year but we have been busy all summer long preparing to educate and inspire students and families to get outside! Throughout the pandemic the word "essential" has become a buzzword. To support our school communities, we will be sharing resources and activities to help meet kids' essential needs: meaningful connection with parents/caregivers; movement and physical activity, and socialization with peers through play.
The Beaverton SRTS program is here to assist students and families during Comprehensive Distance Learning, and beyond, to create safe, convenient, and fun opportunities to keep walking and rolling all year long!
This is a challenging time for all of us and especially our students. Remote learning means more time spent sitting in front of screens. Now it is even more important that we build daily activity into our students' remote learning schedules. We know that regular physical activity can increase academic performance as well as improve our focus, mood and mental health. Going for a neighborhood walk or roll increases our opportunities to see friends and neighbors, from a safe distance, and feel connected to our communities. We appreciate your commitment to encourage families to walk and roll this year.
Beaverton's First Traffic Safety Playground
This summer Beaverton SRTS partnered with Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District to create the first Traffic Safety Playground. Traffic Playgrounds are places to provide children and families a fun space to learn the rules of the road away from street traffic. During the COVID-19 pandemic, they also provide a no-contact play destination for families.
This playground looks like a small version of our city's streets. There are travel lanes, crosswalks, stop signs, and places to visit like parks, businesses, schools and neighborhoods. They are great for scooters, bicycles, wheelchairs or feet. We invite students and families to be creative in how you use it!
You can find this Traffic Safety Playground at Greenway Park off Fanno Creek Trail. You can find more information including COVID-19 safety rules, a map, and ideas for play, on our website at the link below.
