Northpointe Newsflash
March 7 - March 11, 2022
Northpointe Intermediate School
Congratulations to our two DI teams that competed last weekend! We are very proud of the way you represented NIS and excited for you to compete at state in a couple of weeks!
This week we will be focusing on the Great Expectations Life Principle of Common Sense: Thinking before acting: using good judgement. Below is a guide for you to discuss Common Sense with your student at home this week:
- Why is common sense something that you use everyday?
- Why is it important to practice common sense even when no one is around?
Spring Picture Day is Coming!
Nomination for Gifted & Talented
It is time to start referring students for Gifted and Talented testing. This is testing for students who are not currently receiving Gifted Education services. Parents, teachers and students can refer someone for testing. Please fill out the Google form that is found at the following link. A paper copy of information was sent home on February 9, 2022. The deadline to fill out the form is March 11. 2022 at noon. If students are not referred by that time, they will not be tested this year. If you have any questions, please contact Sheri Mohle at sherimohle@tomballisd.net.
5th Grade Science STAAR Interim
5th Grade students will be taking the STAAR Interim Science Assessment on March 9, 2022. This assessment is an online tool used to gauge students' understanding of the statewide science curriculum, along with students' mastery of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), and will help inform teachers by serving as a predictor of students’ performance on the STAAR Science summative assessment that will be administered in May.
STAAR Interim Assessments are low-stakes tests, not tied to accountability, and not taken for a grade. The data will show students’ strengths in the subject areas tested, as well as opportunities for growth.
Northpointe students will be testing on the following dates:
STAAR Interim Science Assessment
5th Grade
Wednesday, March 9, 2022
It is important that all students are present on this testing date. We have a limited amount of time to finish this test, and the make-up window will be short. If students are absent, they will be given an opportunity to make-up their tests upon their return, but this will result in missed classroom instruction.
We are so excited to see the great things our NIS Wildcats will do on this assessment, and we look forward to celebrating their strengths and progress alongside you!! Thank you for your continued support. If you have any questions about the STAAR Interim Science Assessment, please feel free to send an email to robynthrower@tomballisd.net.

SEL: We know that social emotional learning (SEL) changes lives. Studies show that SEL delivers long-term improvements in skills, behavior, and academic performance while reducing anxiety, depression, and substance abuse. On March 11, 2022 we will come together to showcase SEL in our communities. This year as we continue to face the challenges of a global pandemic, SEL Day 2022 will focus on Finding Common Ground, Pursuing Common Good.
Self-injury: also known as self-harm, is a coping mechanism for those who are experiencing extreme emotional discomfort. Intentional, non-suicidal injuries are a technique for a person to physically mimic psychological distress. In some circumstances, the physical harm serves as a temporary sedative, while in others, a self-inflicted wound serves as a way of "feeling something" in order to counteract emotional numbness. One explanation for the lack of awareness around the issue of self-harm is that injuries are easy to conceal or explain away.
