OPENING DAY PORCEEDURES
What time does school start?
· Our morning supervision begins at 7:35 am, so if you are dropping a student off, please do so at or after this time.
· Students will begin entering the building at 7:45 am.
· Our instructional day begins promptly at 7:55. If a child arrives after 7:55, he/she is considered tardy and will need to sign in through the front office.
If my child is taking the bus, how will he/she know where to go?
· We will have several staff members greeting and directing our bus riders to either the breakfast are (if they will be having breakfast at school) or to our playground where they will be greeted by teachers who will walk them to their classroom.
If my child is having breakfast, where should he/she go?
· Children having breakfast at school should come in through the main entrance, Door A. Staff members will direct them to the cafeteria.
If I am driving my child to school, where should I drop her/him off?
· Please use the west circular drive. Pull up to the designated drop-off area where staff members will be waiting to greet, help, and direct our students toward their homeroom areas.
· Please remain in your vehicle until your exits your car. This single lane is a designated pick-up/drop-off zone NOT to be used for long or short-term parking.
· Please do NOT form a second Car Pick-Up lane next to the designated curbside lane. When a second lane is formed, children dart between cars in the first lane putting themselves between two moving vehicles – a very unsafe practice.
If I am walking my child to school, where should we go?
· Please come to the playground area behind the school. Staff members will be there to help students find their entrance areas and connect students to homeroom teachers.
· We will have a Look-Up Station near the picnic table where staff members will be available to look up your child’s homeroom information, if you’ve forgotten it.
· We will have a Supply Drop-Off Station near the picnic table. If you are bringing supplies in for your child, make sure they are labeled with your child’s name and your teacher’s name, and drop them off at our station. We will deliver supplies to the homerooms at the start of the day
· Our homeroom teachers will be outside their designated entrance doors at 7:45 holding up signs with their names on them.
o 3rd Grade Explorers will enter at Door F
o 4th Grade Voyagers will enter at Door C
o 5th Grade Kaleidoscope will enter at Door D
Can I walk my child into the building on the first day of school?
· Please do NOT walk your child into the building. As stated earlier, we want to maintain the same level of safety on the first day as we do every day, so please say your farewells and trust that our caring and experienced staff will make sure that your child gets to his/her classroom.
· If you want to drop supplies off, please make sure they are labeled with your child’s name and homeroom teacher and bring them to the front office or to the Supply Drop-Off Station behind the school. We will make sure supplies are delivered to the homerooms first thing in the morning.
· If you are the parent of an ELP or ELS student or have an appointment with a teacher, please sign in through the front office and pick up a guest tag.

New Procedure:
Communication Regarding Students’ Homeroom Teacher Assignments
Starting with the 2018-19 School Year
The district leadership team has discussed our approach to student placement and the complexities connected to posting class lists in our buildings prior to the start of school. While we understand the interest our families have in seeing which other students will be in a child’s class, for a variety of social-emotional and security reasons we will be moving away from this practice.
Starting this school year, District 34 will be following a process similar to many of our surrounding districts in which parents receive an e-mail with information about their child’s teacher as well as other important details leading into the start of the school year. You can expect to receive this information in August, similar to when class lists were posted in the past (this summer, that will be approximately during the second week of August).
We recognize this is a change in practice for all our families, but our commitment to designing balanced classes according to established criteria, intended to set all students up for growth and success, will remain present.
We appreciate your support and understanding as we move toward this new way of sharing information with parents about their child’s placement for the upcoming school year.

Please use the following link to prove Residency online

8:00 AM - 1PM
From the Glen Grove Health Office
Reminder........ State of Illinois Physical form requirement:
The State of Illinois requires all children to present evidence of having had a physical examination, including all required immunizations.
(State of Illinois Code, Chapter 122, Section 27-8)
- A physical examination (no more than one year old) including immunizations (signed by the parent/guardian and a health care provider) is required for students entering kindergarten and again in 6th grade.
- If a student is transferring into District 34 for the first time, he or she is also required to provide a copy of a State of Illinois physical exam including immunizations (signed by parent/guardian and a health care provider).
Medication at School
If your child needs to take any medication at school during the school day, either prescription or over-the-counter medicine, doctor approval must be on file in the Health Office at school. Forms can be found on the District 34 website on our frequently used forms page. There will be no exceptions to this policy. At no time should a student be given medication to carry to school in their backpack or pocket. Further information can be obtained by calling the Health Office phone number at (847)657-2394. The parents of students who require the use of an inhaler due to an asthmatic condition must contact the school Health Office.
Student Absence
If your child will be absent from school, please call the Health Office phone number at (847)657-2394. You can call this number after hours and leave a message at any time. Leave your child’s name, the teacher’s name, reason for the absence and expected number of days they may be out of school.
Early to Bed, Early to Rise
Early to Bed…Early to Rise…
Beginning in August, an evening comment in many homes might be, “Better start getting to bed earlier.” You know, school will be starting soon…for our new 3rd graders coming over from Westbrook, school will be starting an hour earlier than the 9:00 AM start time they’ve been used to. So… rest up! We’ll soon be gathering bright and early at 7:55 AM!
Starting time at all intermediate schools is 7:55 AM. That means that the buses will arrive at school, for the most part, by 7:45 at which time the bells ring and students begin entering their classes. Morning announcements are made daily at that time, as well, and besides the Pledge of Allegiance, they include congratulatory comments, birthday announcements, AND important reminders & information. It is very important for students to be on time to facilitate a start to the day that includes the knowledge and information they need to be successful.
After School Clubs and Activies

Coding is becoming the most in-demand skill (half of which required in industries outside technology). This knowledge can bolster the chances of commanding a higher salary for your child’s future career. Coding also gives children confidence that they can be designers and builders as well as transforms them from someone who has an idea into someone who can make their ideas a reality. Each child will become a maker of technology rather than just a consumer of technology. By incorporating interpersonal play with screen time each child develops his or her ability to think creatively, work collaboratively and reason systematically -- skills useful throughout all of their lives!
Learn pins, forks, double attacks and checkmating moves! Learn bughouse (team chess) and play for trophies in the school championship! Chess helps map your child's brain for math and science by teaching children how to search for what is relevant, break problems down into steps, and put together combinations that solve puzzles and win games! Chess Club meets on Wednesdays from 2:35 - 3:15 or Fridays from 7:00 a.m. - 7:55 a.m, and 2:35 - 3:15 FOR GIRLS ONLY. Parents must provide transportation to/from Chess Club, as there is no after school bus available.
The Global Language Lab is an educational foreign language program that offers students an opportunity to increase their creative output as well as improve cognitive based problem solving through language learning! Global Language Lab offers students the opportunity to learn a foreign language in a fun, immersive, playful classroom setting. We change the theme every year to stay fresh and inspirational in our classrooms. Our teachers are educated in either ESL or Early Learning Education and experienced as teachers. The teacher assistants are there to learn and help with classroom projects and overall management of the class.
Improv training is Life Skills training. Not just for kids who want to be actors, theatrical training for children has proven to: build self-confidence, increase self-awareness, develop critical listening skills, enhance verbal communication skills, plus so many other qualities! Classes will meet on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 2:35 - 3:30 throughout the year. Parents must provide transportation from Improv Class, as there is no after school bus available.
Clubs Run by Glen Grove Teachers
ART CLUB – Art club is an extra-curricular activity offered to all Glen Grove students. Students can participate in mini-sessions such as sculpture, paper mache, stained glass etc. Classes meet once a week after school on Tuesdays, and each mini session runs for approximately 5 weeks. Parents must provide transportation from Art Club, as there is no after school bus available. Watch for more information in the coming weeks.
CHORUS - If you love to sing, chorus is the activity for you. There are two choral groups at Glen Grove School, a third grade chorus and fourth/fifth grade mixed chorus. Each group meets once a week and participates in activities that emphasize choral techniques and a love for singing. In addition, the group performs for parents twice a year. Chorus meets once a week after school on Mondays for 3rd graders, and on Wednesdays for the 4th/5th grade mixed chorus. Parents must provide transportation from Chorus, as there is no after school bus available. Watch for more information in the coming weeks.
STUDENT COUNCIL – Student Council at Glen Grove is a leadership opportunity available to all students. Representatives are elected from each homeroom class at the beginning of the year. The Glen Grove Student Council initiates a variety of activities for the school. Last year, our Student Council raised money for donations to the American Cancer Society and the Northfield Township Food Pantry. Student Council meets twice a month on Mondays. Parents must provide transportation from Student Council, as there is no after school bus available. Watch for more information in the coming weeks.
