March 2023
Dear Families,
We are so excited to get to see you for conferences this month! This is an important time for our school and families to connect, set goals for the rest of the year, and celebrate successes. Our goal is 100% participation in conferences. If you are unable to keep the scheduled time please let us know as soon as possible so we can reschedule you! We look forward to seeing each one of you the last week in March!
With Warm Regard,

by Julia Cook
RJ doesn’t want to cooperate and share at school or at home. Will his soccer coach help him understand why Cooperation is a skill that he’ll need on and off the field?

Literacy Groups at Naval
In our reading groups, we focus on building essential foundational reading skills. Students receive explicit instruction on letter-sound correspondences, phonemic and phonological awareness (word awareness, rhyme awareness, syllable awareness, first sound awareness, and the ability to manipulate individual sounds in spoken words), high-frequency word fluency, phonics knowledge, and spelling. These skills help promote strong decoding and fluent, accurate reading.
A family’s support of literacy development can positively impact your child’s reading ability. There are many things you can do at home to help support your child!
Read together. You can read to them, have them read to you, or take turns!
Ask questions. What do you think is going to happen next? Do you agree with what the characters did? Have you learned anything new while reading? Questions can help students understand what they are reading and build comprehension skills.
Give choice. Letting kids pick out their own books based on their interests can help increase engagement. If they lose interest before they finish it, that’s okay! Just encourage them to pick out something else they may like.
Visit the library. The library can be a great resource full of activities and book recommendations.
Digital texts can be a great resource. There are many apps and websites that can help build reading skills and a love for reading.
Building reading skills takes time. The most important thing you can do is help your child foster a positive relationship with reading. While working with your child in the area of reading may feel daunting, you’ve got this!

Afterschool Walkers Crossing Naval Avenue
Your students' safety is our top priority! Starting Monday, after school walkers who cross Naval Avenue will meet under covered play area. Staff will walk this group of students to Naval Avenue and cross them all at once. The students will get instruction from us on this process. To reduce the number of times staff is in the street on Naval and to ensure safety for all, staff will no longer cross individual students across Naval Avenue in the afternoons. If you walk with your students to and from school, we highly recommend using the lighted cross walk at Naval &10th and Naval & 6th.
When walking your student(s) to and from school, please be mindful of the crossing guards on duty - please help them keep all students safe by following their directions.
