Using Blackboard to learn French

Getting Started

It takes time to explore the website so you understand how to use the many different tabs and how to use your online textbook.

The orientation tab will explain the many features of Blackboard--click on every link and don't skip any--even if they appear to be repetitive. Then watch all the videos under the "How Do I...?" tab! These videos will show you how to submit homework, record yourself speaking, make a video to send in, etc.

Required Live Class

Each unit will have a required live class for you to attend. The days and time will be posted for each unit. Every French I teacher will teach a class on the same unit. If you are unable to attend my class, then you may choose to attend another teacher's class--but you must attend one for each unit. Attendance is taken and shared among the teachers.

You can attend more than one, too! Each teacher has their own teaching style and wants to help you understand French.

Qui est (who is) ton professeur?

Je m'appelle Mme Melissa Harrelson. I graduated from Guilford College and spent a summer at the Cité Université at the edge of Paris. I continued to study at UNC Greensboro, earning a Masters in School Counseling. I returned to UNCG and added certification in School Curriculum and Development and in Administration.

Although I began as a French teacher and counselor, I spent time as a Assistant Principal and Principal in both middle and high schools. I was also the Director of Employment for the Guilford County Schools and was on loan to NCDPI for 2 years to assistant struggling high schools in NC.

I live in Greensboro, NC with my husband Jerry and have 2 married daughters. Avery and her husband and two sons live in Asheville. Graham and her husband live in Manhattan. I'm enjoying retirement by returning to my roots as a French teacher for NCVPS.
