Toys For Tots
Why I chose ToysForTots as my charity
I chose Toys for Tots as my charity because my family personally donates to them, as well as I help out at my church to work at a toy sale, so I have first-hand experience with the whole concept. Toys for Tots is a NfP organization that collects toys all throughout October, November, and December. Then, they give away all the donations during the holiday season. They're trying to make sure every child receives a gift for the holidays.
Mission Statement
"The mission for the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November, and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas presents to less fortunate children in the community in which the campaign is conducted." www.toysfortots.org
How does Toys for Tots help?
"With a heavy heart, a single mother of two who was down on her luck sat in the kitchen painting an empty container of Quaker Oats to fashion it into a drum for her 5-year-old son. She planned to use McDonald's straws for drumsticks for what was to be her son's only Christmas present. For her 2-year-old daughter, she planned to re-wrap on of her dolls, hoping she was too young to notice it wasn't new. She wasn't sure she could pull it off and then a knock came on the door. The kids beat her there and when they opened the door there was a box of toys on the stoop. 'The kids knew Santa had brought them, but the mother saw 2 marines driving down the street.' " patch.com
How was Toys for Tots started?
"In the fall of 1947, Diane, wife of Marine Reservist Major Bill Hendricks, handed him the raggedy Ann doll she made. She told Bill to give it to an organization for needy children. You see, after World War II, many children were left without their fathers. Since Bill and Diane had no children, she wanted a needy child to have it for Christmas. Bill discovered there were no such organizations so Diane told him he should start one and he DID! As, a result, Toys for Tots was born." patch.com
Other People's thoughts on Toys for Tots
The article Toys for Tots Delivers Spirit of the Season, is highlighting how marines felt bad for not being able to give their kids presents, and being away from their family for long periods of time. They don't want other families to go through this, so that's why they're are so heavily involved with the Tots for Tots program. How you can help Toys for Tots and what still needs to be done.
"You can contribute to your local Toys for Tots campaign in several ways. You can donate a toy at one of the area toy drop locations, host a Toys for Tots event at your home, office or other venue and collect toys for Toys for Tots, or volunteer at the local warehouse." Even though ToysforTots is usually successful every year, it doesn't mean that EVERY kid gets a toy during the Holiday Season. ToysforTots needs your help to spread the word of their charity, and get as many people a possible to donate a toy. With the $5000, ToysforTots will use that towards buying even more toys for the children, as well as creating advertisements to get people informed of who they are and what they're doing.
