RHMS Community Update
May 16, 2022
Principal Letter
Hello Roseway Families,
What a great week at Roseway! We hosted three separate 6th grade orientation meetings. Two were offsite at Hacienda. We are grateful for our partnership with them. Our third information night was at RHMS. At each event, It was such a joy to present our middle school program, answer questions, and see students and families tour the building. During the upcoming week we will continue familiarizing students and families with the grade 5 to 6 transition as we eagerly await visits from our four feeder schools on Wednesday and Thursday.
With four weeks left in the 2021-2022 school year, it is important that we finish strong! For staff and students this means a strong focus on interrupting biased and hate speech.
Our counselors and social worker are working closely with administration by taking the lead in supporting both victims and perpetrators when an incident occurs to interrupt biased speech. We have worked along side district leadership to provide staff with professional development on Interrupting biased speech and sexual harassment. At the heart of this work is the use of a "Speak Up Protocol." I have included the four ways everyone can use the "Speak Up Protocol." Please take time to discuss with your family.
- Interrupt: Speak up every time, in the moment.
- Question: Use curiosity as a powerful tool to uncover what is below the surface.
- Educate: Sometimes there is ignorance or lack of experience - we use this as a growth opportunity.
- Echo: Being the first interrupter is important, but so are the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th voices to join.
This week, we will engage in an additional session to deepen our skills and knowledge. Students are also engaging in conversations on anti bullying and harassment through lessons provided in House. I encourage you to speak with your child about opportunities they have to interrupt. Provide them with some ideas of things they can say like:
- I don't like that word
- Do you know how that word has been used in the past to hurt people?
- The language you are using makes me uncomfortable.
Masks Now Recommended
On Wednesday, May 11, Multnomah County health officials updated COVID-19 guidance given the current surge in cases. The Multnomah County Health Department now recommends that masks be worn indoors until coronavirus case counts and hospitalizations fall. The current increase in COVID-19 cases is expected to peak in mid-June near the end of the PPS’s school year.
In alignment with public health guidance, Portland Public Schools strongly recommends that all staff and all students wear masks at schools, in district office buildings and at other indoor events beginning Monday May 16th. This recommendation includes masking at important end-of-year events such as proms, school performances, assemblies and indoor graduation events.
PTA, Tuesday, May 17!
Please join us in the RHMS library on Tuesday, May 17 from 6:30-8:00. Please note due to an increase in COVID cases, masks are recommended at this event.

Events for Students and Families of Rising 6th Grade Students
We are so excited to begin building relationships with incoming 6th graders! This week many students will be visiting Roseway with their 5th grade classes for a more student centered experience on May 18 and 19.
