Backpack Bundles
In 2020, more than 38 million people faced hunger in the United States, including 12 million children. Blue Ash Elementary is proud, and fortunate to offer the Backpack Bundles program which strives to help children and families by providing food for over the weekends and holiday breaks. A typical bundle consists of two breakfasts (bars and oatmeal), two lunches/dinners (canned fruit, pasta and soup, microwave mac and cheese, etc) All items are kid friendly to open and prepare, and will be discreetly sent home with the student on Fridays in their backpacks. Blue Ash Elementary values our community deeply and would like to ensure that all children have the opportunity to thrive. If you are interested in this program or want more information, please contact Leslie Shoals, School Counselor at shoalsl@sycamoreschools.org or 686-1799 ext. 1153.
Book Fair!
Book Fair is BACK! We are excited to announce Blue Ash Elementary will be hosting a Scholastic Book Fair. Students will be able to shop during their media time November 5-12. Unfortunately parents will not be able to attend, but you will be able to shop online through November 17th.
The Struggle Is Real
As parents and teachers it can be hard to see our students struggle when they are learning a new concept, or when they are repeatedly trying to master a skill. We all know what that feels like and none of us "likes" to struggle. Struggle is unpleasant and uncomfortable, but there is no growth without it. When we try to “save” our children from struggle, we actually prevent them from developing important skills - persistence, problem solving, positive mindset - necessary to reach their full potential. And lets face it....we will not always be around when our children are faced with challenges.
"Not only is struggle good for our brains but people who know about the value of struggle improve their learning potential." - from Why Struggle Is Essential for the Brain — and Our Lives. Full article here HERE
With the myriad of experiences that our children have had over the last couple of years, we know that some may be working through academic struggles that they typically would not have. It is important that we as teachers and parents, support our children, but allow them to be challenged, make mistakes, and work toward more independence. If you are not sure how to best support your child, please talk with your child's teacher. As always, our partnership is vital for student success.

District Curriculum Review - Parent/Community Information
Sycamore Community Schools is currently engaged in the first year of implementation of our new strategic plan to empower all learners to reach their full potential in a globally competitive world. An important goal of this plan is to enhance academic achievement.
To support this goal, the district has partnered with Education Elements to conduct a thorough curriculum review to gain an understanding of current curriculum resources and how those resources impact instruction and student learning. The complete curriculum review will provide information regarding alignment and identify areas of need and growth.
We would like to invite families to join us to learn more about the curriculum review and its findings. These virtual, informational sessions will be led by representatives from Education Elements.
Virtual sessions will be held:
November 4 from 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. https://edelements.zoom.us/j/99368818621
November 5 from 12:00 p.m. - 12:30 p.m. https://edelements.zoom.us/j/99368818621
Sessions will be recorded and viewed after the session. The recording of sessions will be available on the district website.
Helping Our Children Succeed at School
A strong partnership between a child's home and school is vital to help children grow academically, socially and emotionally. Together we build the foundation upon which their future success is built.
From Kidshealth.org:
It's usually easy to talk with elementary students about what's going on in class and the latest news at school. You probably know what books your child is reading and are familiar with the math being worked on. But parents can get busy and forget to ask the simple questions, which can have an effect on children's success at school.
Make time to talk with your child every day, so he or she knows that what goes on at school is important to you. When kids know parents are interested in their academic lives, they'll take school seriously as well.
Because communication is a two-way street, the way you talk and listen to your child can influence how well your child listens and responds. It's important to listen carefully, make eye contact, and avoid multitasking while you talk. Be sure to ask questions that go beyond "yes" or "no" answers.
Besides during family meals, good times to talk include car trips (though eye contact isn't needed here, of course), walking the dog, preparing meals, or standing in line at a store.
These early years of schooling are an important time for parents to be informed and supportive about their child's education and to set the stage for children to develop and grow as young learners.
