Hiawatha Elementary
Week of January 17th
Hello Husky Families-
We had a great first week back at school! Quarter 2 ended on Friday and we are now beginning Quarter 3 this week. Your child’s progress report will be emailed home on Friday, 1/ 21. Just a reminder that we are off of school on Monday to celebrate MLK, Jr. and we have a half day of school on Tuesday. Students will be dismissed at 11;15 on Tuesday. Aramark will have a lunch to go option for students on this day.
Thank you for everyone helping to keep students healthy and monitoring your child’s symptoms at home this past week. We appreciate everyone’s patience as well as we navigated the new guidance from ISBE this week. The new guidance allows students in quarantine to return to school at a minimum of 5 days. At this point, Nurse Cindy will be in communication to discuss your student's health and their return to school date.
Unfortunately as we are dealing with another COVID-19 surge across the country we want to remind you of a few things:
Students must wear a proper fitting mask all day and can remove it for eating breakfast/lunch and when at recess.
Please make sure your child has an extra clean mask in their backpack in case it is needed.
If your child is exhibiting ANY symptoms, please keep your child at home and Nurse Cindy will follow up regarding next steps.
If your child is not fully vaccinated (2 weeks past the second dose) and there is a positive case in the home your child will need to stay home and quarantine.
Please report any positive cases to the school right away.
Please see below for updates on locations for COVID-19 vaccinations for children 5-11. The Berwyn Health Department as well as local pharmacies and doctors offices all have vaccinations readily available. Once your child is fully vaccinated we ask that you submit a copy of the student's vaccination card for our records. This will help us when we need to trace any close contacts to a positive case. As always Nurse Cindy is happy to answer any questions you may have about COVID-19 or vaccination availability.
Together we can work to keep our schools safe and healthy and we appreciate you helping us by following all guidance. Stay safe and healthy Huskies!

News from Nurse Cindy
Children who come to school with symptoms of illness are not in the best frame of mind for learning. Please do not send your child to school if any of the following symptoms are present:
“Runny” nose, especially with green mucous
Rashes or any scratching for unknown reasons, with or without fever
Red, watery, itchy eyes that were crusted shut upon awakening
COVID-19 Symptoms:
Sore throat
Chills or fever of 100.4 or higher
Diarrhea or vomiting
Coughing (new, constant)
Headache
Muscle aches or body aches
New loss of taste or smell
Severe abdominal pain
Difficulty breathing or faster than normal breathing
If your child shows any signs of COVID, please keep home and consult with your Doctor or school nurse about testing. Continue to keep your child home until instructed by your doctor/medical professional that it is safe to return to school. All elevated temperatures must return to a normal temperature for 24 hours without the use of anti-fever medicine (i.e. Tylenol, Motrin, Advil). Please call the school each day your child is sick to report their absence.
Every time your child misses school to see a doctor, have the doctor write a note. Bring the note to school when the child returns.
Thank you for your cooperation in this important matter. Together we can keep all of the Staff and students healthy and ready to participate in school feeling their very best! If you have any questions please call me at any time.
PAPER
District 100 is proud to announce our partnership with PAPER, a tutoring program available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for all 3rd through 8th grade students. PAPER is a chat-based, on-line tutoring program that provides opportunities for students to receive feedback and support in multiple languages from highly-trained tutors in a variety of content areas. Beginning today, all students in grades 3-8 will have access to PAPER on their iPads and throughout the week, teachers will introduce students to the program and teach them how to access a live tutor. The attachments below provide some information for families about PAPER and you can also visit our website for additional information on the program.
District 100’s partnership with PAPER provides a valuable tool to support continuous learning and growth, and we encourage our 3rd through 8th grade students and families to take advantage of all the program has to offer.
Safety Guidelines
Here are a few of the guidelines that D100 will be following for the school year:
Per the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) proclamation, all schools will resume regular, full in-person schedules for all students.
District 100 will work closely with the families of students who are home bound and/or have significant health conditions, as we do in any school year, to determine the best instructional forum to meet individual student needs.
We will begin the year with multiple mitigation strategies in place to ensure a safe return for students and staff. Below is a summary of the mitigation strategies being implemented in District 100 and you can find more detailed information on the CDC website.
District 100 will continue to encourage and provide opportunities for all eligible students and staff to receive vaccinations.
Masks will be required for all students and staff while indoors and on buses.
Masks may be removed outdoors, if physical distancing can be maintained.
Parents will be asked (not mandated) to share if their child has been vaccinated. This will help with determining quarantine.
Three-foot social distancing will be maintained, to the greatest extent possible.
Remote instruction will be made available to students if they need to quarantine during the school year due to exposure.
Fully vaccinated individuals are not required to quarantine if they are asymptomatic.
Regular breakfast and lunch service will resume and additional spaces for meal service will be utilized, when necessary.
Daily self-certification and BINAX-NOW testing for symptomatic students and staff will continue. At this time, we plan to provide optional saliva screening for unvaccinated students and staff.
The cleaning, hygiene, and ventilation protocols that were in place last year will continue.
School-specific procedures will be provided as the school year approaches.
Be Safe! Be Responsible! Be Inspired!
D100 has implemented in-school and at-home Internet content filtering on all D100-issued student devices. Securly, the new content filter, can scan/block/log Internet activity such as:
· Searches
· Keywords
· Website Access
· Google Drive content
· Keyword/searches potentially related to self-harm
When any of the above activities are flagged by Securly, a notification is sent to the appropriate D100 administrator for follow-up. Some notifications, such as self-harm, will result in follow-up with the student’s parent or guardian.
Parents/guardians can view their children’s internet activity through the Securly Home app (available for iPhone/Android/Web)
How does the Securly Home app work?
- First, be sure to add noreply@securly.com in your email application so Securly’s emails don’t accidentally go to your spam folder. Note the spelling of Securly.
- Beginning tomorrow, Friday, December 3, parents/guardians will automatically receive a welcome email to the account we have on file with simple setup instructions that include:
- Login setup
- Downloading the Securly Home app for your device
- Once the app is installed, you may refer to the attached tutorials on how to use the app as well as the following links:

- Detailed use of Securly Home: https://vimeo.com/347224788 (en/sp sub)
- Securly Home setup is required in order to receive notifications about your child’s internet activity.
What if I need help?
- An email help request to Securly can be made directly within the app under Help>Support.
D100 is committed to providing its students a safe digital learning environment, on and off campus. While no content filter can block 100% of inappropriate content, good user judgment can help fill the gap.
