Sherwood Updates
Dear Sherwood Families,
Thank you pandas for a great week at Sherwood! This week we focused on showing safety throughout the building. Our students earned so many Panda STARS that we celebrated today with a dance party every hour! We had so much fun celebrating together! Week after week our students continue to amaze us with their effort and behavior. Thank you parents and caregivers for supporting the Panda STARS!
We would also like to extend our sincerest appreciation to our parent volunteers who spent their time decorating our classroom doors to celebrate Valentine's Day. We also spent time as buddy classes decorating breakfast bags for our PTO sponsored service project next week - Fill a Heart 4 Kids. Check out the beautiful pictures below!
In addition to packing breakfast bags, we will be collecting the following items on Monday and Tuesday next week:
- Hormel Prepared Meals
- Boxes of Mac & Cheese (no cups)
- Ramen Noodles Packets - chicken & beef only (no cups)
We only have a few more days to reach our iREAD goal...keep reading pandas!!!
Panda Pride,
Rachel & Kevin

Parent Survey - 5Essentials
As part of our commitment to continuous improvement and growth, parents, students, and teachers in our District and across Illinois will participate in the annual statewide Illinois 5Essentials Survey. As a parent, this opportunity will allow you to share your thoughts on the important elements of school effectiveness in a survey about your child’s school.
Your identity and survey responses will be kept completely confidential and will never be connected to you or your child. If you have multiple students at the same school just complete one survey. If you have multiple students at different schools please complete a survey for each school.
Erin's Law (Public Act 96-1524)
Erin’s Law (Public Act 96-1524) mandates that Illinois public schools provide training to certified staff on the prevention of child sexual abuse. It also mandates that public school children from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade be educated on body safety rules and how to protect themselves from a perpetrator.
Lesson content varies with the age of the child. The focus of lessons for pre-kindergarten students is identifying body parts (arm, leg, etc.) and feelings. Kindergarten through 2nd grade will learn about personal body safety rules, safe touches, and defining safe people. 3rd through 4th grade students will continue to reinforce the body safety rules, body boundaries, safe touches, good vs. bad secrets, identifying a safe person, advocating for themselves, and how to use social media appropriately. 5th grade students will receive instruction as part of their sexual education curriculum. In grades 6-8, students will review the earlier grade level topics and learn about healthy relationships.
As a result of this state mandate, North Shore School District 112 will be teaching sexual abuse awareness in a sensitive and developmentally age appropriate manner. This will be a one day, 30 minute lesson taught by our school social workers and PE teachers. Our social workers have worked together to develop age-appropriate lessons and are able to facilitate these lessons on February 15th for most classes, Ms. Hilldale and Mrs. Baskin's classes will be provided these lessons on February 17th.
If you would not like your child to participate in these lessons please email me directly at rfilippi@nssd112.org.
Sherwood Valentine's Day 2/14
We are excited to celebrate Valentine’s Day at Sherwood on Tuesday, February 14th. This year our sponsored PTO service project will be supporting Fill a Heart 4 Kids. Intermediate students will be paired with primary students who will collaborate to decorate and fill "Breakfast Bags" for foster and homeless children. All breakfast items and bags will be provided by our PTO.
We would like to provide our students an opportunity to give Valentines to their classmates on February 14th, as well as participating in other related activities. If students choose to bring Valentines, they should do so for all classmates. The Valentines may not contain food or candy, but small toys or school supplies are approved, but not necessary.
