Notre Dame Catholic Primary School
Foundations for Life Long Learning 5 March
Dear Parents and Staff
This weekend the children preparing to receive the Sacrament of Penance (Reconciliation) will make their commitment to being fully ready to take this next step in their Spiritual journey in a few weeks’ time. This is particularly pertinent as we celebrate the Second Sunday of Lent. The extract from the Gospel reading, above, reminds us of God’s great love for us and His desire for us to be able to maintain a strong relationship with Him even when we, inevitably, make mistakes. It is this ever-forgiving nature that we should each work on in all of our interactions and relationships and Lent is the perfect time for this to occur.
CORONAVIRUS
There is much angst within the community regarding the COVID-19 virus. Catholic Education WA has been working with the Department of Education and The Association of Independent Schools of WA to develop strategies to keep schools up to date with current directives regarding management of issues related to the virus. Yesterday morning I participated in a tele-conference with the Deputy Executive Director of Catholic Education, Mr Wayne Bull, and a number of Catholic School Principals. Further to this session the Executive Director, Dr Debra Sayce, sent the following communication to Principals yesterday afternoon. Whilst some of the information isn’t particularly relevant to Primary Schools, I have included the communication in its entirety for those parents who may have older siblings in High School.
International Travel Restrictions
The announcement yesterday that the Department of Education has placed all school-related international travel (with the exception of travel to the USA, Canada and New Zealand) on hold has understandably raised some concerns amongst our school communities. I thank Principals of those schools who have been affected for your prompt response to this, and for your conversations with parents, staff and students that have reaffirmed that this decision has been made in the best interests of the health and wellbeing of students, staff and school communities. We are aware of the complexities of cancelling and delaying excursions that have been planned and paid for well in advance. We are working with Catholic Church Insurance (CCI) in relation to travel insurance arrangements in place for 11 CEWA schools and will continue to provide advice and support where possible to other affected schools on a case-by-case basis.
Updated Advice for Parents and Staff
Effective 1 March 2020, the WA Department of Health has issued updated advice in relation to students or staff coming to Australia from Iran. Only Australian citizens and permanent residents coming from Iran will be allowed entry to Australia and from 1 March they are required to self-isolate for a period of 14 days after departing Iran - consistent with the restrictions for those entering from China. Additionally, Australians have been advised NOT to travel to Iran.
The updated advice from the Department of Education for parents and affected staff is:
- Any student or staff member who has been in, or transited through, mainland China (not just Hubei province) or has been in Iran is excluded from work, school or child care services for 14 days from the date they left mainland China or Iran.
- Any confirmed case of COVID-19 will be excluded until they are medically cleared to return.
- Close contacts of a confirmed case of COVID-19 will be excluded for 14 days since last contact with the confirmed case.
- Students and staff who have returned to Australia from mainland China or Iran more than 14 days ago and have shown no symptoms are able to return to school.
The above also applies to all parents/carers, contractors, visitors and volunteers on school sites.
Parents/carers and staff should notify their school if the student or staff member will be away for the isolation period and confirm the last date they were in mainland China or Iran.
Children and staff do not require a medical certificate or clearance to return to school but must remain at home until 14 days after leaving mainland China or Iran.
The WA Department of Health has updated information including frequently asked questions about the COVID-19. To view this information visit healthywa.wa.gov.au/coronavirus
Pandemic Preparedness Plan
In announcing its decision to upgrade the global risk of the COVID-19 outbreak to “very high”, the World Health Organisation (WHO) advised that there is a window of opportunity to contain the spread of the virus if countries take robust measures to detect cases early, isolate and care for patients and trace contacts.
In response to this, and subsequent advice by the Chief Medical Officer, the Department of Education, The Association of Independent Schools of WA and Catholic Education Western Australia are working collaboratively to establish a pandemic preparedness plan.
In addition to this, a number of CEWA task groups, including school leaders, are being established to undertake scenario planning and develop short, medium and long-term responsiveness and education continuity strategies.
Community Information
With public and media commentary about COVID-19 continuing to ramp up, it is understandable that staff, parents and students may feel stressed and anxious about the situation. The fact is that both the WHO and the Department of Health continue to advise that the current risk of transmission in Western Australia remains low.
As misinformation is likely to heighten concerns, we will continue to provide updates from the Department of Health on COVID-19 and how this affects our school communities. Please encourage staff, parents and caregivers to visit the WA Department of Health or CEWA website as a source of accurate information.
The COVID-19 Principal Information Page will continue to be updated as and when new information becomes available and Principals will receive a daily briefing providing information of importance.
WHAT HAVE WE DONE?
As a result of the above information we have implemented the following:
- The toilets are being checked twice daily to ensure that there is adequate soap for children to wash hands.
- Children are constantly reminded of the need to maintain high hygiene standards.
- All Relief Staff and Contractors are checked regarding recent travel they may have undertaken.

Faction Captains
Hi everyone, my name is Lachlan Brown and I am one of the Faction Captains. I wanted to be Faction Captain because I love sports and helping people and working in the sports shed. I wrote a speech and said it to the Year 4, 5 and 6 students. I was nervous and excited at the same time. I will try hard to help and encourage my faction.

Library monitors
My name is Jasmine and these are some of the reasons I wanted to become a Library Monitor. I love putting books on shelves, helping out other kids in the library, helping with library activities and basically whatever Mrs Sarmardin asks me to do! I love books and I was filled with joy when I got to be a Library Monitor.
Jasmine Hutton
I nominated to become a Library Monitor because I love reading and helping people. I’m looking forward to helping out during Book Week, organising library competitions and scanning books as some of my jobs.

Student Leaders
Being student leader is fantastic! Hi, my name is Mitch Mandusic and I am one of the eight student leaders. I wanted to be a student leader because I want to help people and to boost my confidence when speaking. When I was saying my speech I was nervous but I knew I could be a Student Leader anyway. On the Christmas concert night I was really nervous but when my name got called, I was super excited and I was so happy and now I am wearing my badge I feel so proud of myself.
Mitch Mandusic
I was chosen as a student leader on Tuesday the 10th of December in 2019. The experience was amazing! I was so happy when I heard my name called out, but I knew even if I wasn’t chosen I would still be a great leader inside. I’m very excited for my future and I will help to lead the greatest school in history! When I read my speech in front of the students last year, I was so scared that I wouldn’t be chosen. But I knew even if I didn’t get it, I would still be notable and I had just as much chance as everyone else. Just to let everyone know that we are all leaders inside. Dakota Redfearn
Notre Dame 10th anniversary celebrations
We absolutely loved playing on the water slides to celebrate Notre Dame’s 10th Anniversary.
Camp Quaranup, Albany
After a long bus ride on Monday we arrived at Camp Quaranup just in time for some rogaining. Little did we know, rogaining was just the start of the great camp activities to come . Over the course of the week we attended the Anzac Museum, the Amity, went canoeing, kayaking and even did some archery. The sandcastle competition was a blast and to top it off we had a huge water fight. We have definitely come home with some great stories and lifelong memories!
