General Ulysses S. Grant served as the 18th U.S. president from 1869-1877. Grant has fought in the West Point and the Mexican-American war (1846-1849). After him becoming a national war hero, the republicans elected him as the persident in 1868. A primary focus of Grant’s administration was Reconstruction, and he worked to reconcile the North and South while also attempting to protect the civil rights of newly freed black slaves.
On Mar. 2, 1867, Congress enacted the Reconstruction Act, which, supplemented later by three related acts, divided the South (except Tennessee) into five military districts in which the authority of the army commander was supreme.
