April 2020 Student News
Welcome Back!
First things first, WE MISS YOU! This is the most important thing you need to hear: we miss you, and we are here for you. There will be a lot of messages and information coming to you in the next few weeks, so we will be purposely limiting the mass communications that we send from Teams. However, please know that we are thinking of you and working behind the scenes every day to help our students be successful. Team members will still be reaching out to individuals, and we are happy to hear from you and answer questions. Ms. Ayers, Mr. Evans, Ms. Lingelbaugh, Ms. Martin, Ms. Mayo, and Ms. Murray are available via email just like always, so please contact us any time. We would literally LOVE to hear from you!
There are several items below to help you stay connected and safe in the next few weeks. If you find yourself in need of additional assistance, let us know so we can provide resources and/or point you in the right direction.
One question on the mind of seniors is probably, “Do I still have classes I have to do?” That one is easy to answer, and the answer is YES! The State has said that seniors are expected to participate in whatever remote learning experiences the school offers, and they are bound by the 160 days as all other students in order to graduate. That means that you need to log in to Schoology, check your emails, and complete the work that is being assigned to you by your teachers from now until the end of the year. You are still a senior, and the senior year is not done yet!
The other thought on your mind right now is probably, “What about commencement on June 6th?” This one is more difficult to answer since we are not the ones in control of the social situation. Health and safety are the most important things right now, even as we are aware that milestone moments like commencement are emotionally important, too. While we know that it’s difficult not to have a definite answer right now, we believe that it is important to do all we can to provide our seniors with a memorable event, and right now that means gathering more information and weighing our options before we make a decision. Please look for a short survey to come via email to seniors later this week.

College & Career Information:
Please stay tuned to Mrs. Martin’s newsletters regarding important college and career information, as well as some end of year tasks seniors must complete in Naviance. If you have any college/career questions, please e-mail Mrs. Martin at jmartin@brownsburg.k12.in.us .
FAFSA
Important Reminder: The Indiana deadline to submit the 2020-2021 FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is Wednesday, April 15, 2020. Please visit https://learnmoreindiana.org/cost/can-i-get-help-paying-for-college/fafsa/ for information on what is needed to file the FAFSA. If you have already submitted your FAFSA, we recommend double-checking that you completed the correct year just to be sure. It is very important for seniors to list the colleges they have or will be applying to within their FAFSA.
INvestEd is also available for help if you have questions. They are providing help via email (outreach@investedindiana.org), phone (317-715-9007) or live chat (INvestEdIndiana.org) for students and families who need help filing and editing the FAFSA, discussing financial aid offers, and planning for college.
Naviance Log-In
You can also find the Naviance link on the BHS website under Quick Links
Reminder: Your Naviance username is still your Student ID#; however, your new password is not your 8-digit birthday anymore and is now what you re-set it to be when Mrs. Martin visited your English classroom in January. Use the “Forgot your Password?” on the Naviance log-in if you have forgotten it. If you have questions, please e-mail Mrs. Martin at jmartin@brownsburg.k12.in.us .
Grief & Loss
The abrupt end of face-to-face learning for the 2019-20 school year is upsetting for many, especially for our seniors. Losing out on many of the fourth quarter events such as prom, spring sports, spring concerts, award banquets, and more can be devastating. Some may even be experiencing a sense of loss. Everyone experiences grief and loss differently. Students may be asking themselves, “Am I supposed to be feeling this way?”, “Is it wrong for me to feel a certain way when others are feeling differently?”, “How much am I supposed to be feeling at this point?”
One of the feelings that students may be experiencing is grief. Grief is experienced in many ways, both physical and emotional. Emotions can range from anger to sadness or even numbness. Everything students are feeling is valid, and despite how intense their emotions may be, they are most likely progressing through the stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. This process is not linear, some students may fluctuate between feelings of anger to sadness and back to anger again. It is important to remember to allow for students to move through the process at their own pace and to support them by validating their feelings.
Again, grief and loss is not a process to rush through. However, there are coping strategies that can make the process much easier and can support students as they make their way to acceptance.
Coping Strategies:
Create small goals to accomplish - this can keep students productive and accountable, even small goals. There are goal setting apps available as well.
Stay connected - talking with people who are experiencing a similar loss can help students work through their loss. Online support groups are also available.
Practice mindfulness and meditation - this can help students accept what they cannot control and acknowledge their feelings. There are many free apps to help with this process.
