Math
We are continuing our journey in examining integers (positive and negative numbers). This week we will problem solving real world situations in which we often find both negative and positive values (temperature, elevation, money). Students are focusing on understanding that a negative integer is the opposite of its positive integer, the relationship they have to one another on a number line and their relationship to zero on a number line.
Towards the middle of the week we will be looking at adding rational numbers into the mix (fractions and decimals and whole numbers) by comparing them and examining their relationships to one another across the number line.
By the end of the week, we will be covering absolute value.
Math Website Alert: I have linked the Khan Academy website to the math resources on my website. Please use as needed. There are helpful tutorial videos but they do not always align with the teaching methods we are using and may be a a bit confusing for your student. Please encourage them to make an appointment with me at lunch is they are struggling.
The test for this unit is now set for the 31st of October.
Science
This week is the last week for Biome Projects. Students have done an amazing job of creating engaging and informative posters. Science will be dedicated to filming and editing their newscasts.
Wonder Warm Ups
I have added in "Wonder Warm-Ups" to the beginning of some classes instead of math warm - ups to broaden the students understanding of the application of mathematics in our world. Today, we began with the SR71 and how it was developed throughout the 1950s with limited technology (compared to what we have today) and first flown in 1964. Students can receive extra credit by researching something that came up in discussion that was interesting to them and pertains to mathematics (for example, why the plane is smooth, rounded, why the plane has large engines, how they knew they could fly a plane with out a 'tail' - all of these questions are ones that came after student observation in class. They will need to post their information, summarized on the blog to receive credit. We will do these sporadically throughout the quarter.
STEM
We are still working on our bridge projects.
Students have signed up for a free account at www.tinkercad.com using their mylcusd address and can continue through the lessons.
