What's Happening in 5th Grade?
Reminders
- Please check your child's planner to monitor their behavior chart, and keep updated on what we are doing in class.
- When going through your child's trapper, make sure they are with you and are not throwing away important paperwork.
- Daily Homework includes: Reading and Math Fact Practice
Math
Students have been working hard to understand and apply concepts of place value. We will be completing our unit next week with rounding decimals and review with a test to follow. I will send study information when the time gets closer.
How can you help?
1) Encourage your student to complete the assigned homework. While it is not required, it is highly recommended!
2) Any time you are with your student and you run into a decimal, ask them to read it to you, and identify the places and their value. The more practice and exposure, the more fluent they will become.

Fact Fluency:
As we head into more complex 5th grade topics, it is extremely beneficial for students to have fact fluency. There are numerous apps and websites to help build this skill as well as good old flashcards. Please work with your student daily on building this essential skill. Students are assessed every Friday until they meet 100% fluency.
ELA
For reading we are focusing on point of view using fiction text. This is a change that was implemented after our first in-service day. We are looking at different texts, recognizing whether they are 1st, 2nd, or 3rd person using clues given in the text, and practicing writing our own pieces using different points of view.
For writing, they will continue practicing creating strong paragraphs using topic sentence and many supporting details. Paragraph structure is very important to perfect to be able to advance in our larger writing pieces. The entire first quarter is focused on free writing and sharing of many types of writing.
For homework, the kids will have a nightly requirement of reading for 30 minutes. I was informed by many kids that they are not reading at home. This is currently all I am giving as an expectation from them. Because they are not meeting this expectation, many are at 0 AR points or close to 0. I have sent home a signature sheet for you to sign and return by Wednesday. If there is a note to the side for you, please have a discussion with your child as to why they are choosing not to read and what they can do to remedy this situation. Thank you in reminding them the importance of reading and being responsible in their jobs as students.
Science
Grading:
On their test you will see a percentage, grade (A, B, C, D, F) and a standards based grade (4, 3, 2, 1). For 5th grade reporting purposes the standards based grade is used. I include the percentage and grade as a way for students to learn how they will be assessed next year in middle school, but it is not our grading system for elementary.
Retakes:
For students who did not get a 4 on their test, I offer one chance for a retake. In order to complete this students must give a parent the test and retake test form to sign. If your student wanted to retake, they should have brought this home today. This needs to be returned by Monday.
Our next unit will begin on Monday, we will studying the properties of matter.
Social Studies
For social studies, we are wrapping up our unit on Map Skills. Your child's project is due to me on Monday. I have received several, but know many have a lot to still finish. Incomplete work results in a letter taken in their planner.
We will be testing on the topic Friday. We will then begin our geography unit the following Monday.
