Ruby Bridges - where the STARS come to shine!
Translation available!
Hello from the principal's desk!
Jan 31, 2018
I know I just sent this out three days ago, but I just have so much content that I had to send another one out!
Tonight, Thursday, Feb 1 at 6:15 is our annual Title 1 parent night. We have the Jewish Coalition for Literacy coming to do a presentation on how YOU can help your child at home to be a better reader. They also organize volunteers to help read at local schools, in addition to these schoolwide presentations for families. You should check them out, or have grandparents check them out, if interested in volunteering. Schools can use all the help we can get! Mrs. Furuichi-Fong and I will also be doing a quick introduction to explain what the Title 1 program is all about at RBE, and how great it is for ALL of our kids. We have translation in Spanish, Arabic and Mandarin, and childcare available. We even have snacks and door prizes!
We have a spirit day on Friday - Dress like your favorite school appropriate character. We may see Book Man make an appearance! Any other cool characters coming to visit RBE?
In other news, we had our PTA room parents meeting last night at school. If you are a room parent, please raise your hand. Thank you!!! This is the first year we have tried to create this connection between the classroom teacher and the 25 - 32 parents. The goal is to be able to organize the parent help better, to get the teacher what they need to better serve the kids. Special thanks to Carol Tseng for championing this through the PTA, and to Priya Clemens for also making it happen! One quote from tonight's meeting was, "It feels like we are creating community, right here in this room." Kudos to all the room parents for helping connect our staff to our parent community. A reminder that our Parent Liaison, Tamara Centeno, is also always available for ANY parent who needs help for any matter. You can always reach her via email at centenotamara@yahoo.com or just stop by the office. She is also a fluent Spanish speaker!
Ruby Bridges has amazing stories to tell...from mindfulness training to our incredible STEAM lab to our diverse community...so let's get the word out there! We're starting a volunteer communications team and want your help to snap pictures, write social media posts, create graphic designs, and find new avenues to showcase our awesome school. No experience necessary. Contact me at jwoodward@alamedaunified.org or Priya Clemens at priyaclemens@gmail.com. There is SO much amazing stuff happening here, it is time that others heard about us. As always, check us out on Twitter @RB_Stars, our Audioboom podcast, or just on our website!

With joy and gratitude,
Jesse Woodward

Student Council corner...
Now that January has come to a close, our Pennies for Patients fundraiser has ended. Please send your student collection boxes filled with change to school by this Friday. Student Council officers will be collecting classroom collection boxes early next week. Stay tuned to find out how much our school raised for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society!
February is here and this is the month where we SHOW LOVE TO OUR COMMUNITY OF ALAMEDA! We will be doing a canned and dry food drive to support the Alameda City Food Bank. Our Student Council members set a goal to collect 2018 items during the drive! Please support our community and families of Ruby Bridges who rely on our city’s food bank for food support. Please donate non-perishable items including: cereal, canned food such as vegetable and fruit, instant noodles, canned tuna, bags of dry beans, rice, etc. Food can be brought directly to the bins in the front office or to classrooms. Let’s show our neighbors that we care and help us reach our goal!
Ruby Bridges Annual Cultural Voices Assembly

All students from preschool and TK through 5th grade will come together in unity and we hope you will join us! Seating will be limited so plan to arrive early.

Safe Routes to Schools - Golden Sneaker Contest
Lace up those shoes, dust off those bikes, or get ready to share your ride! The Safe Routes to Schools Golden Sneaker Contest is coming to your school.
From February 26 to March 9, students in participating classrooms will work together to reduce car trips by using active and shared transportation options such as:
Walking
- Biking, Skateboarding, using a scooter, or any other human-powered wheels
- Riding the school bus
- Using public transit such as AC Transit or BART
- Carpooling with other families
The Golden Sneaker Contest offers a chance for every student to participate. If you live too far from school to walk or roll, you can:
- Park a few blocks away and walk
- Meet up with friends who live close to school and walk or roll as a group
- Start a carpool
- Take the school bus or public transit to school
Students will track how they get to school each day. The classroom with the highest percentage of these healthy travel choices will win a Golden Sneaker Trophy and celebration.
Alameda County’s Safe Routes to Schools program, sponsored by the Alameda County Transportation Commission, is a comprehensive, proven approach to getting more kids walking and biking safely to school. For more information, visit http://alamedacountysr2s.org/
