Moving Readers from Struggling to Proficient
I am so proud of the work that all of you have done this past year with respect to our school-wide literacy goal. I came across an article in the Marshall Memo that really resonated with me on this topic. Deborah Walter states that, "Too often, when children struggle to read, educators assume the problem lies within the children themselves. But, in fact, decades of research have shown that whatever children’s innate skills, strengths, and abilities may be, what really matters are the beliefs, attitudes, and actions of the teachers and other adults in their lives."
She continues "In my own work with struggling readers, I’ve found it helpful to ask myself — regularly, as a matter of habit — a trio of simple, straightforward questions: What is it that proficient and fluent readers actually do when they encounter texts? How different is that from what our most vulnerable students are asked to do? And what would it take for educators to close that gap?" I hope you enjoy the article and see many ideas that she shares happening right now at BCMS!

IEP and 504 Meetings
As the year has started, there have been several meetings scheduled for special education and 504s. We want to thank all of you who have been attending additional meetings from what was initially stated in the IEP / Evaluation Rotation. We feel you have been valuable team members to address and support our students' needs. Thank you again for your continued support. Your input is extremely valuable when determining the needs of our students at BCMS.
Thank you,
