Language Arts
We will continue our examination of Author's Purpose. Students will:
- Think about How the Whole Book Clicks Together
- Notice Masterful Writing
- Practice Retelling
- Think, "What Does the Author Want to Teach Me?"
- Learn to TALK about books
Our study of Tall Tales will continue. This Social Studies standard is examined through lots of reading!
Students will learn about :

- Davy Crockett
Students will identify and use proper nouns correctly.
I Can Statements for Language Arts
Standards and I Can Statements:
*Informational:
RI 2.4 – I can determine the meaning of words and phrases in a text.
*Foundational Skills:
RF 2.3 – I can decode words using phonics skills.
RF 2.4 – I can read with fluency and accuracy to help me understand stories.
*Literature:
RL 2.1 – I can ask and answer questions (who, what, where, when, why, and how) to demonstrate understanding in a text.
RL 2.2 – I can recount stories, including fables and folktales, from different cultures and tell the lesson in the story.
RL 2.3 – I can describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges.
RL 2.5 – I can describe the structure of a story and tell how the beginning introduces the story and the ending concludes the action.
RL 2.6 – I can describe differences in the points of views of the characters in a story by changing my voice.
Spelling Words

I CAN read and write words with /ar/.
Vocabulary Words
plead = when you beg someone to do something
compassion = a feeling of sympathy for and a desire to help someone who is suffering
exceptional = outstanding or rare
discover = to find something
infest = to fill with something undesirable or troublesome
Please make sure that you and your child use the vocabulary words each week. Students should be able to understand the word when used in a sentence. The vocabulary tests are read aloud to the students each week.
I CAN learn and use new words.
Social Studies
We will continue to learn about the cultural behind our tall tales. We also will look at how tall tales contribute to our current culture.
Math
We also will continue to use our "Draw, Label and Box" and open number line strategies.

Homework
Trussville City Schools has recommended that each student complete between 45 minutes and one hour per week of Dream Box. Please, DO NOT assist your child with Dream Box activities. They should work on their own. The computer adaptive program will not work appropriately if they receive assistance.
Read daily. Raz-Kids may also be used for reading time. Students should complete books through level P in second grade.
The reading calendar will be due on November 1st.
