BYCATCHING IN OUR HYDROSPHERE
how bycatching effects our water
THE INCIDENTAL CAPTURE OF NON-TARGET SPECIES
Bycatching is a visible problem wherever there is fishing
Species such as dolphins, marine turtles & sea turtles are incidentally captured with the use of this fishing method

HOW IT HAPPENS
Each day, hundreds of kilometres of nets are lined across the ocean floor each day. This strong, modern fishing gear is used to capture the species that is targetted but as it sweeps the ocean floor is also captures a very large amount of marine life that was not meant to be captured. When the net is extracted from the water with the marine animals that we caught, any of the undesired life in the net is thrown overboard, severely injured, already dead or dying.
Bycatch Leatherback Turtle
Diver unsuccessfully trying to rescue a turtle that got caught. This turtle eventually drowned from it's struggle in the netting.
Shark Caught in a Fishing Net
Thresher shark fatally caught in a fishing net
Hammerhead Shark Caught in a Gillnet
The shark suffered from nearly fatal injuries
WE HAVE TO BE MORE RESPONSIBLE
IMPACTS OF BYCATCHING
Estimated that over 300,000 small whales, dolphins, and porpoises die from entanglement in fishing nets each year
Bycatch is the single largest cause of mortality for small animals in our oceans
Species such as the vaquita from the Gulf of California and Maui’s dolphin from New Zealand face extinction if the threat of bycatch is not eliminated
Hundreds of thousands of endangered turtles and specifically the most endangered leatherback turtles drown annually on longlines of nets that have been set to catch tuna, swordfish, and other fish
Bycatch caused by longlines and gillnets is the single most threat to the survival of most marine turtle populations and also many other marine life
WHAT IS BEING DONE?
The creation of alternative gear:
"Circle hooks" are being created for fishing. These hooks are less likely to be swallowed by marine life and they are less likely to be affected by them
The simple word being spread about bycatch
The industry is working to develop, test, and implement alternative fishing gear and to integrate conservation science into effective fisheries to ensure that the innovation is put into action
