Back to School Prep
New Albany - Plain Local Schools 8.19.20
Dear New Albany Families,
Our Board of Education on Monday, August 24th will provide additional updates and insights for our responsible restart to the 2020-21 school year. The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. and be live streamed on the district YouTube channel. In the interim, we are asking families of in-person students to begin to prepare for the first day of school for grades 1-12 on September 8, 2020 and a staggered start for the ELC (kindergarten/preschool) the following week.
Let's Get Ready

Maroon and Gold “Hybrid” Attendance to Begin
Student group assignments are expected to be dominantly alphabetical. Maroon (generally A-K) and Gold (generally L-Z) (with some group exceptions for blended families, academic course needs, and balancing). Group assignments will be confirmed no later than August 28th as part of the back-to-school information.

PowerSchool Access
PowerSchool will permit you to see student schedules, assigned teachers, bus route information, if eligible, and more. Parents will receive two messages next week.
- The first will provide your student's username, password and student number, and instructions for creating a PowerSchool account if necessary.
- The second message will provide instructions for completing the Ecollect forms to update student information. All parental contacts will receive the PowerSchool account setup message, and only custodial, "lives with" contacts receive the Ecollect message. You will need your student’s PowerSchool number to register as a PowerSchool user if you have yet to do so.
Facial Masks/Coverings
The NAPLS Board of Education adopted a mask/facial covering policy as required. This is in compliance with the direction from the state of Ohio and local health department officials. Face coverings must be worn at all times by students and staff unless otherwise advised. All individuals in a school building must wear a face mask unless a mask exemption form (with the required physician documentation) is on file with the school nurses. Any student/staff member approved for a documented face mask exemption may be required to wear a face shield.
Face Mask/Covering Protocols Include:
All students grades K-12 and staff are required to wear masks for the school day as well as at all times on the bus if eligible for and participating in school transportation.
Each student should “wear one/bring one” mask to school every day to ensure that every student has access to clean face masks daily at school. The spare face mask should be placed into a clear plastic baggie labeled with student name and grade level.
The District will have a limited supply of student face masks for use as replacements.
We ask that parents help students from now until the first day of school to learn how to properly use a face mask. Video resources are provided below. Please consider adding incremental time daily to practice the ability to wear a face mask for the amount of time equivalent to a full day at school with periodic mask breaks as outlined below.
Mask breaks less than 10 minutes will be provided when possible. Per health officials, such may only occur when students are properly social distanced (6ft) and stationary OR when consuming food. It is expected that every student will wear his/her own mask for the majority of each school day, just like staff.
Mask Exemptions
Exemptions to the face mask/coverings policy may be made for the following:
Anyone who is unable to remove the approved face-covering without assistance;
Facial coverings will significantly interfere with the learning process;
Facial coverings are in violation of documented safety policies or documented industry standards;
Individuals who have received approval from administration after discussing their request not to wear a face-covering/mask due to a physical, mental, or developmental health condition, if wearing a face-covering/mask would lead to a medical emergency or would introduce significant safety concerns. A physician’s report is required to accompany such a request for consideration.
In this exception, the administration may also discuss other possible accommodations for the student or staff member. Such discussion shall follow District policies and procedures under Section 504 and the ADA.
Helpful Resources
Face Coverings/Masks
A face covering can include a paper/disposable mask or a cloth mask. Click here for recommendations on how well face coverings types protect an individual. A face covering must cover the mouth and nose completely. The covering should not be overly tight or restrictive and should feel comfortable to wear.
Any masks that incorporate a valve that is designed to facilitate easy exhaling, mesh masks, or masks with openings, holes, visible gaps in the design or material, or vents are not sufficient face coverings because they allow droplets to be released from the mask.
How to Safely Wear Your Mask
Wash or sanitize your hands.
Make sure the top of the mask is over your nose and the bottom is under your chin.
Place the mask over your nose and mouth before you use the ear straps or tie it behind your head.
Move the mask around so it covers the nose, mouth, and chin completely.
The tops of some masks can bend. Press your fingers on the top of the mask to make them fit tight around your nose.
Do not touch the mask while wearing it. Use the mask ear straps or ties if you need to make it fit better.
Use the mask ear straps or ties to take it off. Do not touch the front.
Throw away if the mask is disposable.
Wash your mask by machine or by hand before you use it again.
Wash or sanitize your hands again.
