A COLLECTION OF TIPS AND INFO FROM LIBRARIANS AND THE LMC
Helpful how to from Nancy Quesada!
"Check out this screen shot of the ibistro power search page, magically saved as a PICTURE. I plan to print it off, to use as a worksheet, save it on my laptop to use in teaching ibistro, etc., Maybe even print it as a poster, and then laminate.
I know that ibistro may change, but this is helpful for me now.
MANY THANKS TO BIRDIE ZAMORA!
1. ibistro power search screen
2. Control-Print Screen (you don't actually see anything - just do it)

4. Control -V to Paste screen shot into Paint

5. CAREFULLY crop what you want

Favorite Halloween read alouds!
"Heckety Peg by Wood for 1st or 2nd.
Widow's Broom (Van Allsburg) for 3rd.
Joe Hayes' story "Caught on a Nail" from Coyote Under the Table is good for 4th/5th. Short, spooky and funny.
One year I read an adaptation of "The Monkey's Paw" for 4th & 5th and it was a hit. Terrified some of them into stunned silence."

Maya's HB5 suggestions
"Austin ISD's Maya McElroy has some great suggestions to help campus libraries contribute usefully to the administrations HB5 documentation. It's easy, because you are already doing the things - all you add is the letting you light shine piece: telling campus leadership.'

Travis Early College HS Teen Read Week Events
"The theme this year is Get Away @ your library. The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) encourages libraries to use the Get Away theme during Teen Read Week™, October 18 - 24, 2015, to spotlight all the great resources and activities available to help teens build literacy skills while reading for the fun of it. An annual celebration, this year’s theme encourages libraries to help teens escape from the day to day grind of school, homework, family responsibilities, part time jobs and so on by picking up something to read. The theme encourages teens to escape to the library to enjoy novels from genres such as fantasy, adventure, sci-fi, travelogues and many more. Teen Read Week is an opportunity for libraries to showcase to their communities all of the great literacy related resources and services that are available to teens and their families.

Got students headed to the Texas Book Festival?
"The book clubs did not get up to speed in time for the teen book festival but they are going great now and the TBF is in a few days so why not take them?
I have a bus and 20 6th graders who decided to call themselves the Paranormals after reading Paranormalcy by Kiersten White.
I have 12 8th graders who call themselves the Cousins because about half of them were born at the same hospital, reading The Night Gardener by Jonathan Auxier A and Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell.
I have a teacher, a parent, a librarian, and myself as chaperons.
This should be interesting, have a great day everyone. "
-Ivan A Cervantes, Mendez MS
"Sounds like a blast! For the second year in a row we have a school bus that will be taking families to the TBF!"

What's going on at Zilker ES
"1. I make a monthly library newsletter (called Book Marks) using the website www.smore.com, the same website Jenny P. uses to make our Tips O' the Week. I share what's happening in the library, along with pictures and information, with my campus, parents and the community by sending it out in an email to all staff the first Thursday of each month. I also tweet it, Facebook it and ask classroom teachers to forward my email to their homeroom parents. Great way to publicize the library! Here is my October newsletter.
2. I'm looking forward to my Storybook Pumpkin Patch and Mon-store the last week in October!
Storybook Pumpkin Patch: An at home, voluntary project where students can decorate a pumpkin like a character from one of their favorite books and bring it to the library to show it off from the 26th-30th of October. I tell the students no carving, we don't want a stinky library. They are pumped about it! I think my AP might even do it. (see more information in my October newsletter)
Mon-store: I read aloud a Monster themed book to each grade and let them make their own paper monster! I cut out different shapes using die cuts and set up stations for students to choose a head, body, arms/legs, eyes and then put it all together. It's basic, but fun!
My read alouds are:
Kinder-Frank Was a Monster Who Wanted to Dance by Keith Graves
1st-Creepy Carrots by Aaron Reynolds
2nd-Monster Mash by David Catrow
3rd- The Monsterator by Keith Graves
4th- The Monstore by Tara Lazar"
