Bulldog Bulletin
New Britton Elementary - March 11, 2016
Principal's Message
Dear Bulldog Families,
Our third and fourth grade students have finished with the ISTEP statewide assessment. I am proud of the effort and perseverance they exhibited. Third grade students will be taking the Indiana Reading Evaluation and Determination (IREAD) assessment this coming week, March 15th-March 18th. The IREAD assessment measures foundational reading standards through grade 3. The purpose of the assessment is to ensure that all students can read proficiently before moving on to grade four.
Author Dan Killeen visited our students Thursday afternoon. He gave a great presentation regarding how he generates his ideas (from real-life experiences) and keeps notebooks with drafts of his writing and illustrations. It was validating for our young authors to see that the writing process we use at school is the same process adult authors use.
Please remember that we have two fit and fun activities coming up. On Thursday, March 31st we have our annual New Britton Walkathon. Please encourage your student to ask for donations from family members and close neighbors. The money raised by this important fundraiser comes directly back to New Britton in support of teachers and staff supporting students. Don’t forget to sign up to walk or run the Geist 5K with other Bulldog families on May 21st. Please use the following link for registration information:

I would like to thank families for their patience with our new morning drop-off procedures. In order to be safe we need to ensure that students are not walking near buses that are moving. Please do not drop off students before adults are outside motioning you to do so (a few minutes before 8:45). Use a single-file line and drop off only between the two orange cones. Thank you for helping us maintain a safe environment.
As always thank you for partnering with us in education. Have a great weekend.
Sincerely,
Lori Mankin
Join other Bulldogs for a fit and fun activity!
Each year the Geist Half Marathon has over 1,500 local students participate in their 5K, 10K or Half Marathon. This year on May 21, 2016, New Britton Elementary would like you to show your school pride by lacing up your walking/running shoes and wearing your New Britton school spirit wear!
This local race has donated $366,000 back into our schools over the last 8 years to support physical fitness in our children.
As part of the Geist Half School Program, your race packets will be delivered to Mrs. Jessica Shelton (1st grade) on Tuesday or Wednesday of race week for your convenience. More information to follow! You also receive a school discount! We ask that when you register, select the School Program ticket, then select New Britton– it’s that simple! Make this a family day!

Dan Killeen at Barnes & Noble
On Thursday, March 10th, the students at New Britton were treated to a visit by Dan Killeen, children’s book author, illustrator, editor, and publisher. He shared two of his stories and talked about his writing process. Books were made available to pre-order, but there was a miscommunication regarding his autographing, and personalizing the books. I apologize for this error. However, if you would like your book personalized, feel free to attend one of his “Story Times” and “Meet and Greets” at the Carmel Barnes & Noble in the Greyhound Plaza. He will be presenting Friday, March 11th at 7pm, and again on Saturday, March 12th at 11am. Take the New Britton Bookmark/Voucher and our school will receive a small percentage of purchases made during these times, and through March 15th. Orders may be made online, too, at BN.COM/bookfairs.

ATTENTION 3RD and 4th GRADE PARENTS – ISTEP part 2/CCRA (College &Career Ready Assessment) testing done online during the time period of April 18 through May 6. NBE normally tries to get the testing done in the beginning of the time period and more so in the morning so that make-up’s can be done later in that date timeline. As the time gets closer, teachers will send out detailed dates and information to parents.
The Indiana Department of Education has provided parents with some information concerning the testing at the link below:
http://www.doe.in.gov/assessment/istep-grades-3-8
Teachers will be providing students the opportunity to go online to learn about the new ISTEP/CCRA assessment. Below is the link for you and your child to look over in your home and will give you a chance to see some types of questions that will be on the assessment.

3rd grade parents only – IREAD3 testing will occur on March 14 through March 18. Attendance during these days is very important; please make every attempt to reschedule dentist/doctor appointments around the test dates.
Here are just a few tips for a good start to every morning and they also make for an even better testing situation:
- Get a good night’s sleep. This is important every night!!!
- A good morning at home makes for a good morning at school.
- Eat a good healthy breakfast.
- Wear comfortable clothes.
- Talk to your students about the test in advance not just the week of the test. Remind them to give their best effort today and everyday. This test is important, but too much stress can be a problem also.
- Encourage your student to listen to the teacher for directions.
- Remind your student that they can figure out tough questions that they have the grit and perseverance to figure it out.
- Encourage your student to think positively – they can do this!!!
- Smile J and tell a funny joke – laughing is good for everyone.
Thanks for your help.
PTO NEWS
Thank you to everyone who sent in their Walk-a-thon packets! We will announce our classroom winner soon! If you were unable to send your completed packet back to the school, there is still time to participate. We would like to have all of the donations received by the Walk-a-thon so that we can announce our largest student fundraisers and award them with prizes. We will be sending out a volunteer spot to volunteer during the Walk-a-thon on March 31st in the coming days.
Have a great long weekend!

Dollars for Seniors Nears
As the winds of March blow in so does the annual Dollars for Seniors (DFS) tradition! Soon, more than 100 local seniors will take to the phones in a telethon style scholarship fundraiser. What makes DFS so special is that it rewards student effort and is not simply based on merit or need. Students from both area high schools work together to learn about local philanthropy, reflect on their time at HSE Schools, set goals, and try to earn money to help both themselves and their classmates pursue their higher education goals! It takes a lot of courage and a little practice for our students to dial the phone, so consider answering the call and pledging to help! Or you can give directly online in honor of the Class of 2016 at http://hsefoundation.org/events/dollars-for-seniors.
