What's Know Different?
Our goal in Teacher Engagement is to support ALL teachers in their journey in growing their craft - mainly by providing a way to showcase the incredible instruction going on in our great district and creating a forum for teachers to connect and learn from each other. Looking to make a change? Then take a look at what teachers are doing who know different!

Cell Phone Charging Stations so Students Plug In
Jennifer Cissell - Lake Gibson High School
"Struggling with cell phones in the classroom? Every student likes to charge their cell phone so here is an incentive to try in your classroom. Create a charging station to keep those phones out of reach. There are many ways this could look – make it your own. Lay out a few surge protectors to create multiple outlets in a designated area in your room (make sure they are approved by the Network Manager) and come up with something creative to catch the students attention. Make sure to explain that not only are they are getting to recharge their phone for the period but they also will eliminate a distraction for more engagement – it’s a win, win. On my screen when they come into the classroom, I always have reminders for what to do in the first 3 minutes – One of those reminders reads, 'Plug in phone to charge or put it away where it is not seen.' Take it a step further: add phone chargers to the charging station so that it’s even more convenient! Right now, I have encouraged students to bring their own and some do but I think I’ll add some to my station as well. This may add more participation from your students." - JC
Students are Worth the Challenge
Bailey Eade - Blake Academy
"I have worked through what feels like a million strategies when it comes to classroom management. A few have worked while others have failed, but the most influential classroom management strategy that I have found was building lasting relationships with your students. At the beginning of this year I had a kindergartner that had never gone to any type of school before. It was a challenge to get him to work with me or his peers and he would throw the worst fits. I started to get down on his level, take deep breaths with him and start asking him questions about himself. 'What is your favorite color? What do you like to eat the most?' He would calm down, answer the questions and we would move on with our day. We would talk every morning, and this would make him feel better about starting school. Now, his days go by smoother. Of course we have our bumpier days, but we get things done. Sometimes its not about 'fixing' the 'problem' child to change their behavior, sometimes we just need to get on their level, stop seeing them as a problem, and get to know the real kid that no one else does." - BE
