Principal's Corner
Dear Lake Forest High School Community,
Happy Friday–and Happy St. Patrick’s Day! This was a busy week at LFHS, and with four days remaining before spring break–we are all seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.
Congratulations to our Students of the Quarter! Attending this recognition ceremony is such a great way to start the day-with stories of students who are going above and beyond and exhibiting kindness and care. The best part is that our staff members have selected the students and are delivering personalized messages. I always find Student of the Quarter to be a great opportunity to pause, reflect, and stay grounded in all the amazing characteristics that our Scouts have. Shout out to Dr. Sassen and Educational Services for organizing this event!
Another amazing event? TEDxLFHS. On Wednesday, many of our Scouts presented or performed for their peers–from research on Standards of Beauty to allergies to informative debate practices to So. Much. More. The speakers and performers were courageous, inspiring, and our Little Theater was packed with other students and parents. Next year marks our 10-year anniversary, and I am hoping that I will get a little more interesting and maybe muster up the courage to give a talk.
I have heard that there have been questions circulating about our World Languages programs, and namely, Mandarin and French. At LFHS, we will continue to offer courses as long as the courses have sufficient enrollment. For next year, student enrollment was very low in certain levels of Mandarin and French I. As a rule of thumb, we generally look for a minimum of 15 students unless a course is a capstone (final)- level course. We believe in all of our robust course offerings, do not favor one over the other, and also believe that we have an obligation to section what our students select. Dr. Abel, our World Languages Instructional Director, has been working with families about options for a student who wishes to pursue a language level that will not be offered next year due to low enrollment.
On Thursday, I met with a group of our students about their experiences at LFHS. It wasn’t sunshine and roses. It certainly wasn’t in line with the Scout narrative that I tell each week. What it was is the beginning of an open conversation about how students are treated and treat each other–in our hallways, on our fields and courts, and in our classrooms. I learned a lot in that hour, and mostly I learned that we have a lot of work to do in fulfilling our promise of valuing, seeing, and hearing all of our students, with the most difficult conversations starting in the community and in our homes. The school is just that–a microcosm of our community.
Our spring break begins Friday, March 24, 2023, returning to school on April 3rd. I encourage everyone to take this time to rest, recharge, and spend quality time with loved ones.
With much appreciation,
Erin

Severe Weather Drill
March is Severe Weather Awareness Month
We will be conducting a Severe Weather Drill on Thursday, 3/23/23 at 2:00 pm. This will involve moving all building occupants to our designated Shelter Areas in the Lower Levels of the building. The Drill will commence with an announcement over the PA system.

Project Safe Prom
The Junior Class and the APT have been excitedly planning the "Dancing in the Moonlight" traditional Prom at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare for Saturday, May 6th since the beginning of the school year. Now it is around the corner!
Project Safe Prom officially launched last week and we need your support. Did you know the LFHS Prom is completely self-sustaining and we rely solely on ticket sales, junior class fundraising and your generosity? Your donations will help fund a truly magical experience for our LFHS students. Each ticket will remain $95 per person, which includes plated dinner, entertainment, transportation, and security. However, the actual cost to host prom far exceeds the ticket price. We are looking to our generous community to help raise $35,000 to underwrite various costs associated with this event, such as the transportation and security.
Any contribution you are able to make is tax deductible and greatly appreciated! Click the link or scan the QR code below to get started. THANK YOU!

Aiden Marquez
~From Teacher Mara Dukats,
Aiden is a person who clearly cares about learning and about people. He checks in with teachers, past and present, not about grades but about how they are doing. When we talk about character, he is the person who immediately comes to mind for so many English teachers.
Jordan Miles
She is a strong musician and always works hard both individually and with the group. She took it upon herself to clean and organize our percussion studio--including all the equipment, accessories, and miscellaneous paraphernalia that has accumulated there. She did an incredible job--the room has never looked better! She has even added her own unique decorative touches! ~Jane Kessler

TEDxLFHS
TEDxLFHS, held on March 15th, was a tremendous success! This year's event featured eight
incredible student speakers and seven fantastic musical performances, all run by a team of twenty dedicated student volunteers. The day was filled with moments of inspiration, courage, and creativity. Our speakers delivered powerful talks on a range of topics, from beauty standards and stop-motion animation to mental health and personal growth. They were honest, vulnerable, and fearless in sharing their stories and ideas. We were also treated to some amazing musical performances from talented students who showcased their skills!
We want to thank everyone who made this event possible and congratulate our student speakers and performers for their outstanding contributions. It takes a lot of bravery to get up on stage and share your thoughts and feelings with a live audience, and these students did it with grace and passion.
If you missed the event, don't worry - you can still watch the livestream on tedxlfhs.com. We encourage you to take some time to watch the talks and performances, and be inspired by the creativity and courage of our young speakers and performers.
Thank you for your support, and we hope to see you at TEDxLFHS next year!

Deerpath Community Park Improvement Project
The City of Lake Forest is beginning construction on the Deerpath Community Park Improvement Project - located at the Lake Forest Recreation Center, behind Deer Path Middle School. The project involves installing synthetic turf athletic fields and additional amenities for the community park. The majority of construction activities will be confined to the project site, which includes Deerpath Community Park fields and tennis courts behind DPM. The City has been extremely collaborative and intentionally timed the launch of this work to be the least disruptive by scheduling start during the week DPM is closed over Spring Break. The contractor will also work to limit activity during pickup and dropoff times at the school. For reasons of safety, drivers are asked to follow all directional signage. Please note that the fields behind DPM will not be used by our students during construction. Outdoor activities will be diverted to other DPM outdoor spaces. We appreciate your patience. More information about the Deerpath Community Park Improvement Project may be found at http://www.cityoflakeforest.com/DeerpathPark
