Learning in the Library
Monteith Library February Update
We have been keeping busy in the new year here in the Monteith Library. Here is a glimpse of some of the material we have been covering.
Just like in Hollywood, it’s award season in the library. Many of the most prestigious children’s literature awards were given out on January 24th. We focused on the Caldecott Medal which awards outstanding artists for their illustrations in picture books after learning a little about the history of the medal and some of its most popular winners through the years. Each grade level was assigned two Caldecott Medal or Honor books to be read to them. We discussed the differences and similarities in the illustrations and then the students voted for the book with the best pictures by drawing the main character. Votes were tallied and grade level winners are now going head to head and we will continue to draw our votes until we have a favorite Caldecott book for all of Monteith.
February will include information, stories and projects surrounding Black History Month, Groundhog Day, Valentine’s Day and President’s Day. We are highlighting books for students to check out of some of the changemakers that have made significant contributions to American society,as well as conducting research using our library research tools, reading fictional stories about Valentine’s Day and nonfiction stories about current and former presidents. The students will be coloring pictures of inspirational quotes and pictures of changemakers to create a mural for the wall outside the library as well as wear a pair of lens free, colorful glasses to choose a book by an author or featuring a character that may see things differently than them. They are encouraged to see things through someone’s else’s lens to help us have a better understanding of our peers and their experiences.
