Handheld Screen Time and Language Development
A message from our Speech Pathologist...
Between 2011 and 2015, a research team at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids)
in Toronto, examined the impacts of handheld screen time on children’s expressive
language. By their 18-month check-up, 20% were using handheld devices for an
average of 28 minutes. The study found that the more screen time the children
engaged in, the more likely they were to have expressive language delays. Each 30-
minute increase in handheld screen time resulted in a 49% increase in expressive
speech delay.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends parents introduce no screen media
to children younger than 18 months. Many other studies have found school age
children engaging in excessive screen time may lead to problems with low literacy and
behavior problems.
Conclusion: A decrease in handheld screen time may lead to better language
outcomes in children.
