WIZARD WEEKLY
Week of March 27th-March 31st
WORD FROM THE EMERALD CITY
~This is going to be a busy week with testing and some schedule changes. Make sure to read everything below to know the "ins and outs" of the week. The weather may not cooperate for us, but keep your fingers crossed that the forecast is wrong, so the younger kiddos will have some time outside (especially tomorrow).
~ Congratulations to ALL of our campus award winners! Jessica, Bobby, Kelley, and Terri, you are all SO deserving of the recognition, and we appreciate what you all do on a daily basis for our kiddos!! You all will be recognized at the Awards Luncheon on Tuesday, April 18th.
~Make sure to wear your STAAR shirts tomorrow (and Wednesday if possible)! Even though only 4th and 5th grade are testing, this is always a TEAM effort, and we are all united in helping our students to be successful. Jeans this week are fine all week!! Teachers who are testing, make sure to wear comfortable shoes so you can actively monitor in comfort!
~Sonic will be providing breakfast burritos for 5th graders this week for testing. 4th grade and 3rd grade will have burritos when they test in May.We will begin serving the burritos at 7:15 tomorrow in the cafeteria for 5th graders. If your students choose, it would be great to get some thank you letters to Sonic for the donations. 5th grade teachers, if you have a few students who would do a good job, that might be something they could do later this week after testing. We could deliver to Sonic to show our appreciation. Then, we could do the same with 3rd and 4th grade when they test in May.
~ Don't forget about the Salad/Fruit Bar potluck this Friday! Make sure to sign up in the lounge to bring some yummy treats. This will be a great end to a week of testing and something everyone can look forward to! Thanks to Kelly Stowe and Sunshine Committee for organizing another great event!
Campus News
~ Make sure to look at the schedule that Bobby sent out to know when/if your schedule is different this week. Tomorrow, we are using the specials teachers to test, so there will not be specials at all tomorrow. The gym will be open, so if you want to use the gym to have the kids run off some energy (especially if it's raining), make sure to coordinate amongst yourselves (k-3) so that not all of you will be going at the same time. It will probably be best if 2nd grade and 3rd grade uses their normal specials time if they desire. Kinder, you could go after your lunch and use the remainder of the 5th grade specials time slot and into the "specials lunch" time. 1st grade, you could use the 4th grade specials slot of 8:40-9:30. If you decide to change that or tweak it, just make sure to email among yourselves so that everyone is aware.
~ Bobby will begin checking out STAAR materials at 7:15 tomorrow (Monday) from his office.
~Just a reminder for STAAR testers... students can eat snacks but they CANNOT have food on their desk near the test booklet. Water needs to be under their desk. Snack times DOES go against their time, so snacks should be quick. Restroom breaks go against their time as well, so remind students to be quick in the restrooms also. The only thing that time stops for would be nurse visits. Make sure to log when they leave and when they come back. If you have questions, ask!!
~ Bobby has gotten the little cones from Leslie, so you all can use those to set outside when you need a break. This will help us to see from a distance if someone needs assistance and/or relief.
~ All teachers who are testing (including small group testers) should have received their snacks/water last week. Please check to day to make sure you have the right amount. Let Diana know if you need more. .
~ Make sure to cover walls in testing classrooms (if you're administering a small group, please check the room where you will be testing). If you have things up in hallways, please cover those as well. Please don't take things down...just use paper to cover them. Lilly will wait to hang up the new words until after Wednesday testing.
~ Report cards go home on Thursday! Make sure to have grades in and ready!
~ We have closed campus this Tuesday and Wednesday. Please make sure to communicate to parents (especially those who often come to lunch) that no visitors will be allowed on these days due to testing.
Be Vocabulous!
Continue to discuss the vocabulary with your students! It's making a big difference!
Here is the copy of the s'more newsletter about the vocabulary program. It has all the words listed for the year, so you can plan ahead! It has each word listed and the grade level responsible. The kids really enjoyed this last year, and I think this was something I had more comments from parents about than anything! They would comment about their students knowing the meanings of words that they didn't even know. The vocabulary parade was a big hit too. Even the older kids got into it and had fun being creative and participating.
Please turn in the "Word Up" Levels sheets when you have students who display the appropriate use of the words. Obviously, the younger they are, the more "adaptation" needs to occur in order to receive the levels, but the students who received the tags last year, LOVED it!! I will put the "Word Up Level" sheet on canvas!
As a reminder, the way the "Word Up Levels" work, goes like this...
All students will start as rookies and all students will have a chance to move up as many levels as they would like. Spirit Tags (that PTA is selling) will be used for levels 2 thru 5 and when a student reaches level 2 thru 5 they will receive a spirit tag for that level from the principal.
Teachers will nominate students to move up through the levels.
