February is Black History Month
Black History is American History
Pilgrims arrived in Massachusetts in 1620, but the first slave ship arrived in Virginia in 1619. American history and black history can never be separated from each other. Through forced labor, our nation's economy was founded on the tobacco and cotton industries, and our honor was defended by black and white soldiers. The shared history of our country connects all of us, but was especially unkind to some.
Salem Poor began life as a Massachusetts slave and ended it as an American hero. Poor joined the fight for American Independence during the Revolutionary War. Salem Poor is believed to have fought in the battles of Saratoga and Monmouth. He’s most famous, however, for his heroism at the Battle of Bunker Hill where he was called out as a “brave and gallant soldier.” Poor is credited in that battle with killing British Lieutenant Colonel James Abercrombie, along with several other enemy soldiers.
Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)
Jim Crow Laws and the Discrimination against African Americans
At one point in American history, Jim Crow laws were set in place to treat black people as "separate but equal" to how white people were treated. In everyday facets of life, like eating in restaurants or using a public bathroom, blacks were shunned from using the same facilities as whites. Most of the time, designated areas for black people were poorly kept. These injustices can't ever be undone, but they can be taught so they're never repeated.

Life and Literacy Skill: Create and Support a Claim
Evidence is all around us. Scientists may call it phenomena; Historians may get it from sources; Mathematicians may call it statistics or data, but we know to be credible, we must have it or know where to find it. Evidence can help us support an argument, acquire knowledge, develop clearer understandings and help us to make educated decisions. Therefore, it is important to be able to tell good evidence from unreliable evidence.
At Los Coyotes we are working with students to analyze and evaluate the evidence around them. As parents you can also support them. Enjoy opportunities to talk with your child about what is happening around them. Encourage your child to reread information to find deeper meaning. Share your thoughts about topics. We look forward to hearing about your success.
Support claim(s) with logical reasoning and relevant evidence, using accurate, credible sources and demonstrating an understanding of the topic or text.
Counselors' Corner
This month's theme: Friendly February
We need each other more than ever right now! This month let's focus on reaching out to connect with others and doing our best to be a good friend. Our acts of kindness and connection ripple out and impact so many more people than we realize - and they also boost our own happy hormones too! In stressful times people around us may be feeling the strain, so let's try to keep calm, take time to listen and show compassion.
