Week 3 of School Closure
As we enter into the third week of school closures I know that many of you are wondering when this is going to end. I wish I had more information for you, but as of now our district, like many others, is beginning to make plans for closures extending beyond the end of spring break. Nothing has been decided conclusively, but as we listen to medical experts at the local and state level, we are planning for every contingency. With that being said our district has worked on plans for enhancing our distance learning program. More communication will be coming out later in the week on what things may look like after Spring Break.
While we all move forward and do our best through this school closure I have heard from several families the same sentiment, "I'm struggling to even get started with doing school at home." I completely understand this perspective. Most of you were not expecting to be in charge of your child's education. As a school, we want to support you through this time. Here are a few simple steps and some resources for you as you set up your home learning environment.
Idea's for Home Learning
- Set-up a schedule- I know it sounds simple, but this is probably the biggest single step you can take as a parent. Set-up a daily schedule for what you want your child to accomplish throughout the day. This will give you and your child structure. Sample schedules can be found HERE
- READ, READ, and then READ SOME MORE- Reading is probably the simplest and best habit to continue through this closure period. Making sure that your child is reading will allow them to grow. Carve out time in the day to read with your child.
- Turn Simple Tasks into Lessons- Are you making cookies? Turn that into a math lesson about counting. Simple daily tasks can easily be turned into lessons that help your student grow.
- Journal- Writing is another great way for your student to grow while at home. We have journal prompts by grade level on our Parent Resources Page. Also, you can have your students journal about their experiences during the school closure time.
- Exercise-Whether outside or inside, take some time to get movement throughout the day.
I hope these suggestions help you as you pursue home learning. This time is incredibly important for your child. We are facing a very uncertain period of time in regards to how long this school closure will last. The work you do with your child at home will help them hit the ground running when we return to school.
