Jensen Jaguar Families!
Please take the time to read the information regarding the Novel Corona Virus and recommended precautions from the CDC. We are in the middle of our annual flu season, so please follow good health practices such as handwashing, covering for coughs and sneezes and remaining home when exhibiting flu-like symptoms. These practices are the most effective in helping to keep us healthy!
Our ELAC (English Language Learner Committee) meeting has been postponed until March. Our meeting will not take place this Tuesday night (2/11) and will instead be held on Tuesday, March 10. We look forward to seeing you then.
We hope to see you at our PTA meeting next Tuesday evening (2/18) where our RTI specialist Amy Valvo will be sharing information about Jensen's MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Support). Also, don't forget to support our February PTA restaurant night at MOD Pizza this Thursday (2/13)!
5th-grade parents/guardians are encouraged to attend the middle school parent information nights this Wednesday (2/12) at Canyon and Thursday (2/13) at Creekside). These meetings are for adults only. Please leave your children at home.
Enrollment for next school year (2020-2021) begins next week! The district is moving some enroll dates up. Please check the enrollment section below for more information. 5th-grade students have 2 special new field trips this month to visit both Canyon and Creekside Middle Schools, meet with students and staff and tour the campuses. This is an important opportunity for students to see the middle school campus before they select a school for next year. Middle school selection will begin the first week of February. Middle School applications went home last week for all CVUSD resident students. 5th Graders who are on an interdistrict transfer will need to reapply for an interdistrict transfer with their home district and will not receive a middle school application this week. Middle school placements will be made based upon space available.
Are you planning to move and/or not return to Jensen next school year? If you have a child in K-4th grade currently at Jensen Ranch and you are not planning to return to Jensen Ranch next school year the "Are You Moving" form will be available in next Sunday's Round-Up. We are trying to get a good understanding of our enrollment numbers for next school year and your input is valuable.
Jensen is bringing Waste-Free Wednesdays to Jensen to encourage students to use less non-recyclable and non-reusable items in their snack and lunch. Click here for more information! In the next two weeks, Jensen will be completing our Green School's application with CVSAN. Please take a look at the information found in this week's Round-Up for ways you can support our Green School program! If you are interested in participating in any of the Green School's activities through CVSAN in February, please see the information below. We can earn extra points in our application if our Jensen families participate in the CVSAN February activities. Extra points equal extra dollars for Jensen!

Corona Virus Information from Alameda County Health
Symptoms include high fever or cough and shortness of breath. Having these symptoms and either having traveled to Wuhan in the last 14 days or come into contact with someone who may have 2019-nCoV would make a person more likely to need immediate medical evaluation.
WHAT CAN I SAY TO PARENTS, FRIENDS AND FAMILY?
- Follow the CDC’s guidance for travelers.
- Practice good hygiene. Wash your hands with soap and water and cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing.
- If you traveled to Wuhan and feel sick with fever, cough or difficulty breathing, seek medical care right away. Before you go to a doctor’s office or emergency room, call ahead and tell them about your recent travel and your symptoms.
- Travelers arriving from Wuhan are being screened at SFO, LAX, and JFK in the United States, and ATL and Chicago will start as early as January 25, 2020.

Earn Points Towards Green Ribbon at Zero Waste Week!
- Waste-Free Wednesdays @ Lunchtime
- Families from your school can earn points by participating in our Fruit Gleaning event from 3:30-5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 5th, 2020 (GR activity 1.12) Families with extra fruit on their front yard trees can volunteer their trees to be “gleaned” (picked of excess fruit) and any family can volunteer to help pick the fruit! All fruit collected is donated to Castro Valley food pantries to help those in need. Donating trees to be gleaned counts as additional Green Ribbon credit in the write-in section under Reduce (GR activity 1.16)! Contact jordan@cvsan.org to volunteer a tree!
- Join us at our Zero Waste Cooking Workshop from 5:00-6:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 6th, 2020 to earn Green Ribbon credit in the write-in section under Rot (GR activity 4.16)! Registration (required) will be up soon at www.cvsan.org/ZeroWasteWeek.
- A great way to earn Green Ribbon credit in the write-in section under Reuse (GR activity 2.17) is by attending our film screening of “The True Cost” (3+ families) on the evening of Friday, February 7th, 2020 from 6:30-8:30 p.m.! This riveting film explores the environmental consequences associated with fast fashion. Food and refreshments will be provided. Visit https://truecostcvsan.brownpapertickets.com/ for more details and to register.
- Learn how to repair your broken items at our Fixit Clinic from 1:00-4:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 8th, 2020 (GR activity 2.16). This year’s clinic will have a special focus on fixing bikes! Know some handy parents or students at your school? We are also recruiting coaches for our Fixit Clinic, which is another way to earn additional Green Ribbon credit in the write-in section under Reuse (GR activity 2.17)! Contact emmanuel@cvsan.org to volunteer as a Fixit Coach and/or register for the event.
Below is a picture of 3rd grader Gibson A. at the CVSAN Zero Waste Workshop last Thursday, February 6, in support of Zero Waste Week. He was youngest attendee who assisted with making KimChi. He learned of eating fresh foods, and fermenting foods to eat at a later time so it does not go to waste. Gibson also participated in Waste-free Wednesday Lunch! Thank you, Gibson for representing Jensen Ranch!

Public Charge Rule
On August 14, 2019, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security amended federal regulations known as the public charge rule. The changes to the existing rule, effective October 15, 2019, will make it more difficult to apply for permanent residency or earn a visa if an applicant is dependent on government aid such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, housing assistance, and Medicaid.
It is important to know that the Child Nutrition Programs are not public benefits. Please continue to complete meal applications and alternative meal forms.
Second Step
As part of our PBIS supports, Castro Valley elementary schools use the Second Step program to address:
- Social-Emotional Learning
- Bully Prevention
Child Protection
Second Step is a program rooted in social-emotional learning (SEL) that helps transform schools into supportive, successful learning environments uniquely equipped to encourage children to thrive. More than just a classroom curriculum, Second Step’s holistic approach helps create a more empathetic society by providing education professionals, families, and the larger community with tools to enable them to take an active role in the social-emotional growth and safety of today’s children.
You are encouraged to access the Second Step document below for more information on the ongoing lessons and to support your child's learning at home!

Potential Parcel Tax Measure
Click Here to Access the CVUSD Local Funding Page for More Information
High-Quality Education
Castro Valley Unified School District (CVUSD) provides an excellent education that prepares students to graduate ready for competitive colleges and 21st-century careers. This is possible thanks to strong academic programs, excellent teachers, high-performing students and a supportive community.
Planning for the Future
As we look to the future, we know we cannot rely on the state to provide the level of funding our schools need. Our District is among the lowest funded in Alameda County and has already made $1.8 million in ongoing cuts in the past two years. Additionally, the Bay Area is one of the most expensive places to live in the country, and many of our teachers live right here in Castro Valley. By retaining and attracting the highest quality teachers, we can improve student achievement and continue providing an excellent education to students.
Potential Local Funding Measure
To provide dedicated funding for our schools to support programs and teachers, the Castro Valley Unified School District Board of Education is considering placing a local parcel tax measure on an upcoming ballot. Although no final decisions have been made, a measure may cost $96 per parcel per year and generate $1.5 million annually for six years.
Funds from a measure could:
- Retain and attract highly qualified teachers
- Preserve strong academic programs in reading, writing, science, technology, engineering, arts and math
- Prepare students for college and careers
- Support the health and well-being of all students
- Keep schools clean and well-maintained
Fiscal Accountability Provisions of Potential Local Measure
- All revenue from the measure would be spent right here in our District to support local schools and could not be taken away by the State
- A citizens’ oversight committee and annual audits would ensure that all funds are spent as promised
- No funds could go to administrator salaries
- Seniors would be eligible for an exemption from the cost
