Parkdale Elementary School News
Message From the Principal
Welcome to a new year at Parkdale Elementary School! I’m looking forward to working with staff and families to establish a school experience where students explore learning and flourish in a safe and nurturing environment. I’m excited to share with you some of the ways our staff is planning for this.
First, we will continue to foster a safe and productive school through our Mountaineer Markers program. Students will be taught and encouraged to behave in ways that are Responsible, Respectful, Safe, and Kind. Students will receive frequent instruction and reinforcement of our school expectations. We will also look for multiple opportunities to recognize students when they are showing these behaviors. Please ask your child about the Mountaineer program and look for ways you can support this at home.
Teachers and staff will be continuing high levels of academic instruction with the goal of teaching the whole child. In addition to instruction in Science, Social Studies, Art, Health/Physical Education, Technology, Music, Writing, and Math, teachers will continue with our new Reading curriculum called Wonders. I look forward to opportunities this year to talk with you about our school curriculum and your child’s progress.
Lastly but not least, we want to partner with you! Research shows that being involved in your child’s education is a critical factor in their success. One way to get involved is to volunteer at school. We welcome you to volunteer in whatever way you feel comfortable. I will send more detailed information home soon about how you can volunteer at our school. I believe that, together, we can provide a solid educational experience for our children and prepare them for great success now and in the future.
Please stop by and visit any time. I look forward to partnering with you for the success of your child.
Welcome New Staff to Parkdale Elementary School!
First, Sue Jepson-DeResta will be our new Child Development Specialist (CDS, aka Counselor). She worked several years as a CDS at May Street both in the regular education setting and in the Therapeutic Learning Center. She brings a great wealth of experience working with students in many settings. She brings a positive outlook and a “can-do” energy that will surely be a positive addition to our team. Welcome Ms. Jepson-DeResta!
Lydia Peterson is joining us as our new music teacher! She recently graduated with her BA in music education from Luther College in Iowa. She completed her student teaching last year at an international school in The Netherlands. In addition to studying and enjoying music, she was a track athlete in high school and college. She comes to us highly recommended and will be a great asset to our school. Welcome Ms. Petersen.
Anna Diem will be our new Speech Pathologist. She has worked in Early Intervention in our district for a number of years. Her experience working with younger children will provide a valued perspective to the work we do with school-aged kids. In addition, she will be one of our parents! Her daughter will be in the 1st grade here at our school. Welcome Ms. Diem!
Rosie Thomas-Wiley is joining us as our new 1st grade teacher. She lives here in the upper valley and has been teaching ELL and 3rd grade most recently at Chenowith Elementary School. She is bilingual in Spanish and English, has a wealth of experience both in the classroom and the business sector, and brings a high level of passion and expertise to her work with kids. Welcome Ms. Wiley!
Finally, I’m pleased to welcome Jessica Gehrig. Ms. Gehrig will be our new Reading, Math, and ELL specialist. Like Ms. Wiley, she also comes to us from Chenowith Elementary where she taught 3rd grade. Her skills and experience are vast including particular strengths in technology. She has coached robotics as well as Battle of the Books teams. I’m looking forward to the innovation and excitement she will bring to our school. Welcome Ms. Gehrig!
