ZCS Food Service - LUNCH FEE WAIVER EXTENDED
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s waiver which provides free meals to students on a temporary basis has been extended thru the remainder of this school year. As noted on September 15, 2020 when this information was initially shared, ZCS students at our secondary schools can receive one free breakfast and all ZCS students can receive one free lunch each school day.
Federal guidelines define school meals to be made up of specific food components and portions.
· Breakfast consists of an entrée, fruit/juice, and milk.
o A minimum of 2-3 items must be taken to qualify for free yet one item must be a fruit/juice.
· Lunch consists of an entrée, fruit, vegetable, and milk.
o A minimum of 3 components must be selected to qualify for free, one of which must be a fruit or vegetable.
§ At our elementary schools, menu items are placed on the tray and choices are limited to the type of entrée and milk.
§ At our secondary schools, items are selected by students as they go thru the line and placed on the tray by the server.
All students attending school in-person or virtually have the opportunity to receive this benefit.
NOTE: A la cate items, such as additional entrees or drinks and snacks, fall outside the parameters of the waiver, and as a result, there will still be a cost for these items. Lunch account deposits to pay for these purchases can be made via www.schoolpay.com .
Families who wish to enroll in the free and reduced lunch program to receive other educational benefits, such as textbook fee assistance, must still be enrolled in the program for these benefits to take effect.
Any specific questions regarding food service can be shared with the ZCS Director of Food Service, Jan Swander, at jswander@zcs.k12.in.us

Recess Reminders
Each child is expected to be suitably dressed for play outdoors. As the weather turns colder, each child needs a winter coat, hat, and gloves.. Snow pants, waterproof boots, warm gloves/mittens are required to be able to play in the snow. All children play outside except on rainy, icy, or very cold days (wind chill below the 10-20 degree range). Inside recess will be held on those exceptional days. A child who is well enough to come to school is well enough to go outside and play. Exceptions will be made if parent/guardians send in a note from the doctor stating that the child needs to stay inside. While each school’s recess safety protocol is unique to its campus and is available on school websites, all ZCS students honor the following safety code: We play together kindly and look after one another. We treat playground equipment with care, and share with others. We respect the adults who look after us. We always tell an adult if we need help resolving a conflict or if someone is injured. We stop and listen for directions when the bell/whistle sounds. We walk sensibly to our lines and quietly to our classroom

Second Step Home Links are simple, fun activities that encourage interaction between students and their adult family members, caregivers, or other important adults. The activities give students a chance to practice Second Step skills outside of school and help families learn about the skills so they can use them at home.

COVID TESTING
There is some new information on our radar which was confirmed through a conversation with the Boone County Health Department this past week. We want families informed so they can make the best decision for your respective family members.
Some COVID tests are not currently accepted by the Department of Health for return to school/work –
- The only negative result that will allow a child/staff member back into school is a PCR. (Per IN Dept of Health and Boone County Health Department, a negative rapid antigen test for SARS-CoV-2 is not acceptable for a return to school.)
- Schools can accept any antigen test if it comes back positive---We will treat as a positive case (Through this process, we will inform you of isolation/quarantine protocols as required by the state and county health departments.)
- If a family/household member has a PCR antigen test that comes back negative and the individual has no symptoms, then no other testing is necessary. Students can return to school.
- If symptomatic and rapid antigen comes back negative then a follow up PCR test is required due to the high rate of false negatives in the rapid antigen test.
Important NOTE: * If an individual has had a close contact with a positive COVID case, a negative test cannot shorten the quarantine period.
