October Words for the Wise!
Set Sail for New Adventures! Learn Like a Pirate!
News from sea!
During the first six weeks of our journey on the Owen Citizenship, the crew and passengers have faced many challenging learning opportunities so far and have found they have grown and developed their minds, bodies, leadership, collaboration skills.
Creating a student-led classroom is where each passenger feels empowered and confident to collaborate, lead and succeed. We are eager to continue our journey because we know that whatever comes our way, we will do our best work, handle the responsibility individually and as a crew to overcome any challenge, and celebrate our passion for learning and achieving our goals along the way. That's what learning like a pirate is all about.
If you are interested in developing your sea legs, volunteer on the Owen Citizenship. Arrrggg crew will be happy to set anchor so you may jump on board. We welcome your partnership.
Kids First,
Captain Kim Earlenbaugh

CHARACTER COUNTS! Wise Word of the Week! Moving From Character Education to Character Action!
Throughout our journey we will focus on a "Wise Word" each week. Yes, we will learn and discuss the characteristics and behaviors that someone may exhibit that shows he/she has internalized the meaning of the word.
Starting with character education and moving to character action is not a year-long journey, it is a life-long journey. We want our passengers to about character education, but more importantly we want our passengers to apply these character traits in their daily lives.
I invite you to team with us in this journey by looking for your child applying these positive characteristics in their lives outside of school. We'd enjoy hearing from you.

5Essentials Survey for 2019 Opens October 22, 2018
The last three years, the Owen Citizenship has had the highest parent/guardian response in the district with 53% of the families completing the survey. Our goal is to achieve this again this year. If so, the Owen Citizenship will enjoy a school wide "Pirate Party" assembly.
The Captain's crew (class) with the most parent/guardian completing the survey will earn a class "Pirate Party" of their choice.
The deck (grade level) with the most parent/guardian completing the survey will earn a "Pirate Party" of their choice.
An informational flyer on how to access the 5Esssentials Survey will be coming home in a few weeks. I will also forward it to you via connect-ed.
Parent/Guardian & Teacher Conferences
It is our goal to meet with every parent/guardian to share your passengers progress on his/her journey this year on the Owen Citizenship!. You landlubbers will be able to schedule conferences for all of your passenger through your Home Access Center (HAC) if you have set it up. My first mate, Mrs. Herrick, has been contacting any parent/guardian who hasn't done this already to assist you. If you have any questions, please contact us.
We shared with Power PTC that they would have to walk the plank if they didn't get rid of the activation codes and make the system more user friendly for everyone! They listened! You will be able to click on the link through your HAC between October 8th-26th to sign up. You will see the name of your passenger's captain and his/her schedule. If you would like to meet with additional staff, you need to click on his/her schedule to see the availability.
