Scanning with a Mindful Eye
Students had the opportunity to sample four brand new award-winning chapter books and complete a review on the menu of the "Reading Cafe."

Award Nominees for the 2018-19 school year.
Tasting with an Open Mind
Students are encouraged to take risks with book by reading the summary and the first few pages before deciding if the book is "just right" for them.
Summer Readers Celebrate!
Book Fair Gift Certificates
Students who earned one stamp on their summer reading passport received a gift certificate for a free book from the our Fall Scholastic Book Fair!
Pizza with Principal McCain
Students who earned three stamps on their summer reading passport enjoyed a pizza lunch with Principal McCain at the Simpsonville City Park.
Treats in the Library
Students who earned two stamps on their summer reading passport were invited to the library for an afternoon treat of bookworm cookies, a drink and some conversation about our favorite summer reads.
Library Lessons
Light and Shadow
First grade students learned about light and shadow. Teams worked together to build a structure with opaque and translucent LEGO bricks that would create an interesting shadow in the sunlight.
Elements of Fiction
Fifth grade students defined literary terms, classified types of conflict, identified examples of figurative language and labeled a plot diagram in digital breakout.
LEGO Bridge Building
Third grade students read "Iggy Peck Architect" by Andrea Beaty and created a LEGO bridge that would span a river without any supports in the water.
"A Big Mooncake for Little Star"
Mrs. Sherbert's 4K students learned about the phases of the moon as they listened to Grace Lin's newest book, "A Big Mooncake for Little Star." The author autographed the book for the students of Ellen Woodside at a recent book signing!
"How Do Dinosaurs Stay Safe?"
After listening to "How Do Dinosaurs Stay Safe?" by Jane Yolen, kindergarten students learned about staying safe online and signed an Internet Safety Pledge.
Nonfiction Text Structure
Third grade students worked in teams in a race against the clock to define and classify examples of nonfiction text structures in a digital breakout.
