Southside Elementary News
Week of 9/23/19
From Mrs. Allen
Start with Hello
We are encouraging all students to wear a shirt that has special meaning to them next Tuesday (that has their favorites on it or maybe even their favorite color). The purpose is to have a conversation starter for students who might not know what to say to someone they don’t typically talk to. We are also encouraging students to play and mingle with new people during their recesses and free times throughout the day.
Morning Car Rider line - Closed at 8:00!
Morning drop off in the back is closed at 8:00. We are going to start closing the gate at 8:00 for the safety of all of our students. After 8:00, you will need to park in the front parking lot and check your child into the office. All doors will be locked (front and back) at 8:00 sharp. It is imperative that you walk your child into the office and sign them in from 8:00 on. Thank you for your help with this.

GRANDPARENTS' DAY!
Thursday, October 3rd for students whose last names begin with A-L
Friday, October 4th for students whose last names begin with M-Z
Southside Color Run!
The Color Run will be on October 25th on the back playground. Last year the kids and parent volunteers had a great time. Everyone is able to participate, but the more $ you raise the more prizes you earn. The top fundraisers from each grade will be able to throw color on Mrs. Allen and the overall top two fundraisers will win Beats earbuds.
Parents, if would like to volunteer from 11:00-3:00, please email Courtney at cabeck1979@gmail.com
Book Fair is COMING!
Our fall book fair is on the way! THANK YOU for supporting our school library by shopping in our book fair. Last year book fair profits purchased all summer reading materials, purchase the books we give away on Grandparents’ Days, purchase a green screen (used weekly for our Southside News), repair a few of our technology pieces, and give our library a fresh new look this summer. Our fall book fair dates are September 30- October 4, 2019.
Reminders
Send book fair money in an envelope or bag with your child’s name, teacher, and write “Book Fair.” This way we don’t accidentally spend lunch money, field trip money, etc. in the book fair.
We are required to collect 9.5% sales tax. Below is a chart to help you and your kiddo plan any shopping they will do.
Kids in grades 2-4 may shop on their own in the book fair before school or at recess. Kids in grades K-1 may shop during their library class, from 8 -9:30, or after 2. That way I can devote my attention to assisting them.
Kids accompanied by an adult may shop anytime.
We have lots of things for sale. If there are specific things you do or do not want your child to purchase, please send a note.
E-Wallet is new this year! This is a way to set up a digital piggy bank for your child. This way they don’t have to carry cash back and forth. Of course, cash, checks, and cards are always accepted. See the flyer that was sent home last week if you’re interested in E-Wallet.

Morning Drop-Off Reminders
Students may be dropped off using the back car line at 7:30. (We often try to have a staff member there as early at 7:25 for your convenience but we cannot make any guarantees!)
Students should NOT be dropped off in the front parking lot. The front parking lot is ONLY used if the parent/family member needs to come into the office.
Merge kindly and use your blinker at the stop sign!
Have students kissed and loved before getting to the drop off location. Unbuckle and have backpack/lunchbox ready for exit! Please have students exit on the passenger side nearest the awning.
Remind your child that as soon as your car stops at the drop-off area, they may exit the car. They do not have to wait for an adult to open their door.
Wait patiently for the line to move forward. Do not go around cars where students are still exiting the car.
We will continue to get faster but know that keeping our kids safe is always our top priority!
