Kindergarten - Mrs. Chua
Reading/Math Curriculum
Reading:
Next week we will begin Unit 3 in reading. The orange colored word cards will be introduced this month. Students should be able to read the following words by sight (please do not have your child sound them out):
a, an, and
here, he
is, it, I
no, see, she
the, this, we
These words will be assessed for first trimester report cards. Also, most consonant sounds will be checked. ( Z,z W,w V,v Y,y X,x Q,q will be assessed second trimester.) Students will need to point to a picture that they hear the sound at the beginning of the word and a picture where the sound comes at the end of the word.
Math:
By mid November we will be in Unit 3, Teen Numbers as Tens and Ones. I've noticed that some children are mixing up numeral names that sound similar. For example, 'sixty' and 'sixteen' sound a lot alike especially if we are talking fast. If you notice that, take a moment and explain the difference. "Sixteen is a teen number. We write it 16. Sixty is a number we use when counting by 10's. We write it 60."

A Word About Winter Clothes
Please make sure to get winter clothes that your child can get on and off independently. If your child cannot tie, please do not buy tie boots. Kindergartners feel a great sense of accomplishment when they are able to do things independently.
Children should have appropriate clothing to play outdoors. For right now, hats and gloves are fine. Once we have snow, children will need boots, snow pants and extra mittens and socks.
