What are we learning?
In Reader's workshop we are learning what good readers do including:
- Making connections-to self, other texts, and the world around us to understand what we are reading.
- Building a bigger vocabulary to know more words and what they mean
- Asking and answering questions while we are reading to increase comprehension.
We will also be learning about story settings and how to retell a story by including all the important events from the beginning, middle, and end.
Writing
In Writer's workshop we are beginning to write a personal narrative using the writing process.
Social Studies
We will be continue to learn and discuss how to be a Good Citizen. This week we will be focusing on the Pledge of Allegiance and Texas Pledge. Our goal is to be able to recite the pledges as well as understand why we do the pledges each day. On Wednesday we will be observing Patriot Day and taking time to remember and honor those who showed bravery and courage when our country was attacked on September 11, 2001. We will be also discuss how we can be good citizens by being brave and courageous.
Word Work-We are working on the pattern of words that are: consonants, vowel, consonants (CVC). Example CAT, DOG, and MAN. We will be look at the letters being placed in beginning , middle and end of words. Our weekly sight words in, is, it, like, look . On Friday we will give a test where students will be expected to read and write the words.
***We will start giving you child the High Frequency Words on Friday. This will give you child 2 extra days to learn the words. ***
In the upcoming weeks we will be starting Words Their Way (WTW) which is the program we use to teach spelling patterns. You child will come home with a new sort each week to practice throughout the week. We will have spelling tests on Fridays where students will be expected to read and write up to 10 words from their sort. We ask that they don't glue down the words until Thursday night.
Handwriting- We will learn and practice how to write letters with proper strokes and pencil grip. This week we will review letters Ll, Ii, Tt. Students should be using a pinch grasp for pencil and strokes start from the top and pull down.
Math-
We are starting a new unit in mathematics called Number Games and Crayon Puzzles. We will be working on mathematical ideas such as composing numbers with 2 or 3 addends and solving addition and subtraction problems. Throughout this unit we will be working on the following goals:
- Find at least five 2-addend combination of ten, such as-1+9=10, 2+8=10, 3+7=10, 4+6=10, 5+5=10 etc.
- Combine 2 small quantities by counting on, such as 5+3=?--> 5...6, 7, 8-->5+3=8
- Interpret (retell the action and sequence) and solve addition and subtraction story problems.
- Subtract one small quantity from another, such as-9-6=?, 12-4=?, etc.
In our math class, students engage in math problems and activities and discuss the underlying concepts. The share their reasoning and solutions. It is important that children solve math problems accurately in ways that make sense to them. You can contribute at home by encouraging your child to explain his or her math thinking to you.
Related Activities to try at home:
Counting Activities- Your child can count collections of objects. Many first graders are able to count quantities of about 20 or 30 accurately. With your help, your child can count even higher.
Together, count sets of objects around the house such as silverware, pennies, or collections of cars or animals. You can also look in books, magazines, and newspapers for pictures that your child can count.Math and Literature- Here are some great counting books you can find in your local library and read with your child. Have your child count the objects on each page, and see what mathematical concepts your child discovers.
