Waging War For Literacy

AND WE WILL WIN!

Accelerated Reader Kick-Off September 10th!

Big picture

September Monthly Focus: MyON

This month's lesson will center around the myON app located in myBackpack. MyON is a personalized literacy platform that offers learners easy access to great content! The myON digital book library contains thousands of enhanced and age-appropriate titles for PreK-12. The titles are matched to each individual learner's interests, grade and Lexile® reading level. You and your students will enjoy learning to utilize MyOn and your scholars will even be able to take AR tests on the books that they read! Stop by the circulation desk to sign up for MyOn training!

SEL Book of the Month

This rhythmic, read-aloud title is an unbridled celebration of the self-esteem, confidence, and swagger boys feel when they leave the barber’s chair—a tradition that places on their heads a figurative crown, beaming with jewels, that confirms their brilliance and worth and helps them not only love and accept themselves but also take a giant step toward caring how they present themselves to the world. The fresh cuts. That’s where it all begins. -School Library Journal

SEL Competency and Theme:

Self-Awareness

The ability to recognize one's own feelings, interests, and strengths, in addition to maintaining an accurate level of self-efficacy.

Individuality and Positive Self-Concept

We are aware of the importance of each unique identity and the strengths we all bring as individuals.

International Dot Day is coming September 17th!

International Dot Day is named for the classic Peter H. Reynolds storybook the Dot. The book shares the story of a girl who begins a journey of self-discovery after a caring teacher challenges her to “make her mark.” On Monday, September 17th, Deerwood Academy will join millions of other schools from around the world, to celebrate individuality, creativity and the power of reading. Please wear your uniform with polka dot socks, ties, sweaters, and as many other polka dot accessories as you can think of! Let’s go polka dot crazy! We can’t wait to hear about how your students plan to make their mark on the world!
