Waging War For Literacy
AND WE WILL WIN!
"Let us pick up our books and our pens. They are our most valuable weapons."
-Malala Yousafzai (2014 Nobel Peace Prize Winner)
I have had such an amazing time working with your classes and completing orientation during the month of August. Now, we are ready to READ! There are tons of activities in store for you and your scholars this month as we maintain laser-like focus on our literacy goals. Prepare to celebrate International Literacy Day, the Accelerated Reader Kick Off, International Dot Day and Family Literacy Night! Additionally, please be reminded that I am here to assist you with your literacy needs in any way that I can. Need resources for an upcoming unit or project? Want to collaborate on a lesson? Need ideas about boosting excitement for AR and reading? Not quite sure how to approach a particular topic and would like a thought partner? Please just send me an email and I would be happy to help. Stop by or email me at drrice@atlanta.k12.ga.us.

Accelerated Reader Kick-Off September 10th!
September Monthly Focus: MyON
SEL Book of the Month
This rhythmic, read-aloud title is an unbridled celebration of the self-esteem, confidence, and swagger boys feel when they leave the barber’s chair—a tradition that places on their heads a figurative crown, beaming with jewels, that confirms their brilliance and worth and helps them not only love and accept themselves but also take a giant step toward caring how they present themselves to the world. The fresh cuts. That’s where it all begins. -School Library Journal
SEL Competency and Theme:
Self-Awareness
The ability to recognize one's own feelings, interests, and strengths, in addition to maintaining an accurate level of self-efficacy.
Individuality and Positive Self-Concept
We are aware of the importance of each unique identity and the strengths we all bring as individuals.
International Dot Day is coming September 17th!
